Before my transplant,I remember feeling 15 months pregnant and trying to walk down the halls of the hospital in a manner not reminiscent of a beached whale, a BLUE whale. No salt, severely limited fluid intake, lasix and a struggle to turn from side to side in bed, was life for awhile. I did have my belly "tapped" several times, with no problems, except for keeping my pants up after having 5 liters of fluid removed.

After my transplant, the problem resolved over several months. There was a lot of attention paid to body chemistry, monitoring potassium levels, as well as immunosuppresent levels and nutrition issues. But the ascites was resolving. I also remember how my legs and arms looked when the fluid was leaving, rather like Popeye arms, and legs where parts with little muscle were skinny, but areas with more muscle and fat were still swollen. Fat feet, thin ankles, fat calves, skinny knees and big thighs, and a strange desire for spinach.

One of our mantras is "PSC is Different for Everyone", some post transplant people are as active as they were before dx, but I think one's endurance is affected. Of coarse we are getting older, and aches and pains and changes in health can be blamed on that rather then the tx.

Take Care
