Guest guest
Hello fellow listmates, I'm pretty new here and new to the public school system. Just got my son's IEP done (not perfect but getting there) but now we are having issues with aftercare. He has had some behavior issues, I believe due to transitions and some teasing from other kids, and has now been suspended from aftercare for 5 days. I think we need to look for a more structured and supportive of special needs, aftercare program. Does anyone have any recommendations? We are in the Pembroke Pines area. Transportation would be a major plus as well. Thanks for all of your help and useful information in this great group! Liz

Guest guest
Hi Liz, It would be interesting to know what types of snacks your son is getting in aftercare. Many children with autism have food sensitivities and will react in violent ways. My son will be 9 yr old next month and we just had a gluten test done on him. He is highly sensitive to gluten, it turns out. After 2 weeks on a no gluten, no casein diet, his behavior has changed quite a bit. Also be watchful for food coloring and preservatives. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi Liz, Your story could not have come at a better time. I currently have both my children with autism at a regular aftercare. My oldest son will be 7 in a couple of weeks and has been attending this daycare/aftercare since he was 2 years old. Having him go to a regular daycare/aftercare once he started with the public school at age 3 is one of the best things I have done for him. He is high functioning and is doing really well there now. The daycare recently replaced their director. The new director has been giving me grief about my younger 3 year old son, who is low functioning. I recently called the YMCA to see if they could take him for aftercare but they are only able to put him on the waitlist. I'd prefer to keep him at the regular aftercare because I can have therapists go into the facility to work with him after school whereas the YMCA does not allow therapists on site. In looking up my son’s rights, I realized that the daycare was out of line! Please see: http://www.ada.gov/childq%26a.htm Take care, Gillian To: "sList " <sList > Sent: Wednesday, September 5, 2012 5:17 PMSubject: Re: Aftercare options for my 6 yr. old son with PDD-NOS Oops forgot the number: YMCA Broward County Special Needs Aftercare: To: "sList " <sList > Sent: Wednesday, September 5, 2012 2:05 PMSubject: Re: Aftercare options for my 6 yr. old son with PDD-NOS Hi Liz, It would be interesting to know what types of snacks your son is getting in aftercare.
