My daughter will start middle school and I want to see what is out there. Any other suggestions would be great about other schools for 5th grade up as well. Guest guest
Tonya, I went to see Divine Academy for my daughter this past summer. I liked the school, administration and curriculum. Unfortunately, even with McKay I could not afford it. They do have financial aid for those who qualify. I will definetely look at this school in the future. I have two friends who's children attend and they love it. I would suggest to call and request a tour. One of their regulations is that you leave the child with them for about three hours to see if the child would benefit from their program. Good luck!Marly To: sList Sent: Sun, September 23, 2012 9:03:40 PMSubject: middle school I would love all feedback on Divine Academy in Hollywood. Guest guest
The tuition was $25,000 which I personally think its too expensive. Plus you need to pay $1000.00 for supplies and registration fee yearly. It was too much for me. Guest guest
Has your daughter been in a cluster setting until now, or has she been with typical developing children? The Divine Academy is for students with disabilities. The classes are very small and the kids learn many functional skills (hygiene, tooth brushing, dancing, ). If your child needs a self contained setting, then this is a great place to be. However, if she can handle mainstreaming she may be better served in the public middle school. In addition, you need to drive her to the school. For many years, private schools were usually for high achieving children whose parents were well off. Students with disabilities had few choices. This has changed now. However, you still need to expect to have to pay some of the tuition, and you have to provide your own transportation rain or shine. Guest guest
You may want to check out Christi Academy in Sunrise. If the child is pretty high functioning and can manage being in a class with 14 other students and one teacher, the cost is much lower. When students need to be in a smaller setting (6:1) then it gets more costly. . Ida > > The tuition was $25,000 which I personally think its too expensive. Guest guest
Hi, Christi/Stepss Academy in Sunrise provides parents great piece of mind in that respect. Only ONE child enters the bathroom at a time. (They have a key to open the door and no one else can go in while he/she is in there.) There are cameras installed in every classroom, hallways, and they are in the process of installing them in the cafeteria as well. Parents can call the headmaster and request a review of a tape if they have any concerns. They are super open about this! There is always a lot of adult supervision during lunch time. Parents can volunteer too (but every volunteer must first go through a background check.) I have enough things to worry about my child as it is, and safety at school should not be another additional issue, right? They take Mckay and Step up scholarships. The phone number is . Guest guest
Cherilyn, I had the same concerns with my son who is in 6th grade. He attends Driftwood Middle. You need to communicate your concerns with the ESE Specialist. I spoke to my son about my concerns of him going to the bathroom during school. Be open and honest with your child. If he has to go to the bathroom he is accompanied by another child. This is something that I requested during the initial meeting before school began. I requested a private tour of the school for my son. Which school will she be attending? Guest guest
I agree with , talk to your IEP team about your concerns. My son went to Tequesta Trace in Weston and he was okay. My own son, and others, had a great experience at Sawgrass Springs. If safety is an issue (and isn't it always?) talk to the school about your concerns, and make sure provisions are made in her IEP. Many of the schools now have some type of " buddy " program, where a typical peer is designated to be a lunch buddy. I don't think any of the middle schools have recess any more?
