Guest guest
My daughter is on Focalin 10 mg 2x's a day. When she started it was 5 mg. I honestly don't remember how much it effected her appetite bc it was many years ago when she started; however, I know she did eat! We had tried a different medicaid with same issue except she wouldn't "eat or talk," so that she one, aderall, we removed her from asap. Is he eating at home when he takes the Focalin? If so, I would make sure he has a snack so his stomach doesn't get empty completely and if they give a dose at school with food or milk as well. gb7289@... Guest guest
Unfortunately, that is the side effect. We give our son his meds AFTER he eats a good breakfast, whether he wants to or not, especially since we found out that he wasn't eating lunch at school at all. Thing is, my son is older. When he gets home from school he has a late lunch or a big snack. If your kid goes to therapy after school, we used to stop on the way and get him something to eat. I also instructed the teacher/aide that they should try to get him to eat SOMETHING at lunch time, even if it was peanut butter and crackers or a nut bar (which I packed). Something with protein. Not just junk food. Robin Has any tried this type of medicine for their ASD/ADHD child? Guest guest
We also noticed it worked only about two months at which time he lost weight; hard to force a 6 or 7yr. old to eat. Then he became so aggressive, we had to discontinue it. I have heard that this medication is contraindicated with any dx. of ASD. He is much better without this and the help of Dr. Udell. Guest guest
After my son was on Focalin for a couple of weeks he started licking around his lips so much that he had a big inflamed ring around his mouth and I thought it was just a behavior and didn't think much about it until a teacher told me it could be a side effect. I called the doctor and nurse practitioner told me to take him off immediately - the licking stopped the next morning. Unfortunately, that is the side effect. Guest guest
The " good effect " of the medicine has indeed worn off and I am getting more complaints then ever from his class. Mainly saying he is very " defiant " , wont complete tasks, focus, and blurts things out of contexts. Which medication did you try after Focalin? I spoke to my neurologist and she said his dosage is adequate and she wont increase it because his teachers complain, she said I can try something else but would have to start from the very minimum 5mg and then increase every month until it has a positive effect. My son is very behind in 1st grade and has the risk of being left behind after attending 2 parent teacher conferences. > > My son was on focalin when he was also 6 and made him extremely thin,he had no appetite at all, after 2-3 months the " good " effect of the medication(concentration, focus) fade, plus he was loosing too much weight,we decided to try something else. > Good luck!!! > Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T > > Neurostimulant Focalin > > Has any tried this type of medicine for their ASD/ADHD child? Guest guest
I understand the frustration, my daughter's appetite is too big and don't feel like focalin is working anymore, not sure bc of teenager behaviors though too? Guest guest
Decreased apetite and subsequest weight loss is a given side effect of Focalin; also it worked for about one month and then he started getting even more aggressive, more meltdowns, etc.; all this subsided once we took him off.... Guest guest
Focalin seemed to be working for our son at first. His appetite was fine but he very quickly developed a tic. He was licking all around his lips until they were raw. In my ignorance I didn't even realize it was a tic - I thought it was a "behavior"... because he has done it before with no medication. I'm thankful that a teacher at school school (not his own teacher!) told me that she had seen it happen as a side effect of medications before. I immediately called the doctor and the nurse practitioner told me to stop the medication immediately. The licking had stopped completely by the next morning. Before Focalin we tried Metadate and got no result at all... like it was water - nothing! Vyvanse made him very anxious and repetitive with greatly increased autistic and OCD symptoms. We gave it for only two days. Terrible!! We haven't tried any more medications. We have been working with N.A.E.T. and diet since June and we have seen some good changes... subtle but very noticeable to us. Guest guest
Hi Raquel, I've heard very good things about Dr. Udell but we haven't been to him yet. We also tried something called NSRT - its sort of like NAET but it uses a cold laser instead of accupressure/accupuncture. Our son improved quite a bit. The most dramatic change was when his scary sounding croupy cough went away soon after one of the treatments. He also was much calmer and stopped hitting at school. VERY NICE! We decided to try "true" NAET because a friend of mine was pushing it.... Her family has had some really great results. and the practitioner does a technique that deals with emotional causes of some issues and I'm very intrigued by that. Now we are noticing that he focuses longer and he seems to be thinking more quickly. He even did some math the other day that is more complicated than usual and he "got it". I was amazed. We aren't seeing the math thing consistently but I think that with the improved focus combined with the brain "clearings" he's getting we will see good changes over the next several months. A lot of patience and dedication is required for NAET. For most people It takes a lot of visits over time. It was interesting that even after the NSRT our son still had food "allergies". No wonder the diets only had minimal results when he was reacting to many basic and unavoidable components of food. :-) Now he's more sensitive and can usually tell if something he ate is affecting him in a negative way. Its a very good development. Good Luck!!Sandy Thanks for your response. I have made an appt with dr Udell in Weston to do testing and seek another alternative to neurostimulants. We have been working with N.A.E.T. and diet since June and we have seen some good changes... subtle but very noticeable to us. Decreased apetite and subsequest weight loss is a given side effect of Focalin; alsoit worked for about one month and then he started getting even more aggressive, moremeltdowns, etc.; all this subsided once we took him off.... Guest guest
We are seeing Cobb-Sime in Coral Springs. She probably has a long waiting list. We also know Landon Agoado (sp?). He is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and does a lot of NAET. I really like him a lot. The other doctors I worked with are great, too. I don't have the numbers for them now but I will find it and post it soon. They are such good people and the treatments have all been beneficial. I was treated, too and my awful headaches disappeared after a while. Terrific!!I want to make something clear: we have also heard many stories about the amazing results Landon and the others have achieved with their patients. I even met some of them. I am very happy with ... but it was mainly the emotional work and my friends pressure that sent me to her..... I have great respect for and confidence in the others and I would definitely go to them again. A couple of years ago Landon didn't say much about the emotional healing techniques when I asked.... and that is a big part of what I was looking for. Sandy which practioner do you use for NAET?
