Dear Friend,

In New Jersey, 1 in 49 children are diagnosed with autism before they’re 8 years old -- well above the national average. And behind these shocking statistics are real families with real struggles who need real support.

That’s why I’ve been fighting for years on behalf of children and adults with autism spectrum disorders. My Combating Autism Reauthorization Act, which builds on efforts started in 2006, ensures the agencies responsible for federal efforts on autism education, research, screenings, intervention and treatments have the resources they need to succeed.

So when Buck, a New Jersey filmmaker, approached me regarding her documentary that follows a New Jersey teacher struggling to prepare her autistic students for the incredibly tough world that awaits them once they graduate, I knew it was a project I wanted to be part of. ly, it’s a question we don’t discuss enough: What are we doing to support our students with autism or special needs after the days of school, structure and hands-on learning are over?

In “Best Kept Secret,†takes us inside the world of the F. Kennedy School in Newark and the classroom of Miss Mino, who has selflessly and proudly dedicated her life to autistic and special needs children and their families. And now, thanks to a Sundance Institute grant, has received the funding she needs to finish telling this inspiring story. Soon, the world will see the heart of Miss Mino and the dilemma these students and families are facing.

This story inspires me to continue fighting on behalf of children and adults living with autism. Please click here to watch a preview of the film by and then share it with your friends and family to help spread New Jersey’s “Best Kept Secretâ€.
