Good afternoon. Does anyone know of any place in Broward County that uses Early

Start Denver Model of therapy? I'm also searching for workshops/ classes that

teach parents how to use this model themselves. Thank you very much and have a

great day :).

Hi good afternoon and hope that all is well. Wanted I give you a quick insight about this model. This model is just RDI mixed with ABA. It believes in the generalization from the beginning but at the same time structured. When looking for a service for your little one make sure that they are working on generalization and socialization from day one :)The Melian girls

Do you think this is something a child turning 5 could still benefit from? Or is it mostly for that 18-36 month window that is always referred to for this model. To: "sList " <sList > Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2012 4:46 PM Subject: Re:

Thank you for your response. The reason I chose this model is because it’s the only one that I saw that specially mentions toddlers. I do understand it tobasically be ABA but play based. What is RDI? Are there any other ABA type for toddler models out there? All of these terms are new to me- what is generalization? And socialization for a typical 21 month old is more adult based instead of peer, so I imaginethat is what you mean by socialization- age appropriate socialization? Also how much therapy is needed? I am seeing 20 hours + a month and is that all done with a therapist or is some done with parents? I don’t mind being the one to work with my son on adaily basis but only if I’m trained to do it correctly. My son’s largest area of concern is receptive and expressive communication. From what I understand about ABA, it will help him a lot if that area. If he is getting behavioral therapy does that meanhe doesn’t need speech and occupational therapy? Pardon all my questions, but you seem to know a lot about this! I’m just really new and totally confused and not wanting to miss out on this precious window of opportunity for early intervention. A little background of my situation- I do not have a diagnosis yet for my 21 month old son. I have an apt with the neurologist in early December. My husbandand I started noticing that our son was no longer saying the words he used to say and when I googled it, I saw loosing speech as a big red flag. Reading on, I noticed that quite a few of my son’s behaviors were on the MCHAT. I immediately contacted his pediatricianand scheduled an apt. He told me that my son is fine, because we are a bilingual family his speech will be delayed and not to worry about the lost speech-it will return, and that there was no way my son could be autistic because he is very affectionate andhe smiled at the DR. I wasn’t really sure what to do next, but I knew my son wasn’t “fineâ€. I contacted Early Steps (BROWARD) with my concerns. Upon evaluation he was accepted into their program based on his low scores in the 2 critical areas of communicationand social/emotional response. Also, on his IFSP, they noted that I said he lost language, and that they observed him not responding to his name as well as gesturing and pacing. They do not make diagnosis but they recommended that I go to a neurologist. Starting tomorrow I will have an infant toddler development specialist in my home to work with my son as well as my husband and myself, twice a week at an hourat a time. She specializes in the behaviors they saw in my son so she will also be observing and if these behaviors are continuously observed my son will be re-evaluated and put into a different early steps program that involves a model that they don’t callABA and I’m not really sure what it is or how many hours a week it involves, but I do know it’s parent education based rather than medical based. I do not have to have an official diagnosis to start receiving that therapy, if the ITDS feels he would benefitfrom it. I also am having my son evaluated by an OT, PT, and ST. I am considering a developmental preschool. At the same time, I don’t want to overwhelm him and overkill all the therapy. I wish I could just have one model/therapy that encompasses everythingand is on a regular basis each week, and is lots of fun so my son really loves it- and also has a physical component to it (I believe he is a sensory seeker) so he can do things like loading up a wagon with cans of beans and pushing that wagon around, outsidein the fresh air and sunshine, all at the same time that he’s learning communication skills, if that makes any sense at all. Dear ,The generally accepted protocol for ABA calls for 40 hours/week. However, we did 20 hours/week with my son seeing significant gains. There are groups out there than train parents how to do ABA; Reaching Potentials http://www.reachingpotentials.org/ and ARC Broward www.arcbroward.com are two of these. ABA does not take the place of speech and occupational therapy; rather, it complements it. Relationship Intervention Development (RDI)

https://www.rdiconnect.com/pages/rdi-program-for-asd.aspx I'm not familiar with, however if you go back over the listserv archives at www.groups.yahoo.com/group/deniseslist you will see information about practitioners. There are support group meetings run by Autism Society of Broward twice a month, one features a speaker on a related topic, and one meeing is called SPEC, or Support for Parents of Exceptional children, you can check out their wonderful website at www.asabroward.org , or connect with them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/asbasb/Keep asking questions, that's the best way to

learn!Regards, From: Mustafa
