Guest guest
A low ferritin (below 70-90) is a very common cause of not tolerating T3. If it were me I'd try decreasing the T3 very slightly to see if the side effects improved; if yes, ferritin needs to be raised before increasing T3 again. Lots of folks just can't tolerate the T3 they need until they raise their ferritin, as T3 requires a good ferritin level in order to be utilized properly. > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > 1. Guest guest
Thank you Margery. I don't understand why my doc put me on 75 mcg of Cytomel when he knew my T3 was so low. Will try decreasing and see if feel better. I would also rather stay on natural with a slight addition of T3 until my ferritin comes up. Then if I am still making too much RT3, go to T3 only. > > > > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > > > > > 1. Guest guest
That sounds like a good plan. If your RT3 is caused solely by low ferritin, that may be all you need to do. You are right, you will need to watch the RT3, though, if it has another cause(s), you'll still be making too much, and you may need to take the T3-only route. I may have sent you the ferritin-raising suggestions already, but just in case not: for raising ferritin, many here have had good results with bluebonnet iron, 150-200 mg/day. Here's a link: http://www.iherb.com/Bluebonnet-Nutrition-Chelated-Iron-90-Vcaps/11571?at=0 Iron can sometimes cause digestive side effects, starting on a low dose and tapering up may minimize these. > > > > > > > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > > > > > > > > > 1. Guest guest
Margery, thanks more. Will give it a try. I am taking the Blue Bonnet iron bisglycinate b/c others wrote that it did not upset stomach. Have been noticing some stomach issues though. Only 27 mg, so am taking 4 a day. Will check out the ones for which you sent the link though. Am trying to grasp all of this, but so complex, even after reading the book completely. All of it interplays so dynamically - the cortisol, the ferritin, the T3. I am having trouble even walking b/c my feet hurt so badly and diffcult even picking up a glass of water b/c my hands hurt. Had this pain for about 5 years, and when my doc first put me on Armour, it all went away after about a month. It was wonderful. But only lasted about 9 months, then downhill. That's why I am wondering if it was low ferritin all along, or that and low cortisol (my cortisol was low on testing) or also in combo with the first two or alone. Others have mentioned that the dose of Cortef th doc has me on is too low (15 mg.) - can cause more harm than good - that I should be on at least 20 mg. Thanks again. > > > > > > > > > > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > 1. Guest guest
Hi Cindy - can't remember...did I already suggest temperature graphing? It can be useful for the " is it cortisol, thyroid, or both? " question, which is something that might be especially useful for you right now. You are right, it does all interplay. Here's the link to the temp graph instructions, from Dr. Rind's website: http://www.drrind.com/therapies/metabolic-temperature-graph#directions (This group does not agree with everything Dr. Rind says, but his temperature graph can be very useful). Regarding the iron bothering your stomach - I know the usual recommendation is to take it on an empty stomach, but I can't do that, it makes my stomach hurt. I take it after a meal. If it is, on the other hand, a constipation-type issue, I'd try going back down to 2 a day for a few days, then 3 a day for a few days, then back up to 4. A slow adjustment period sometimes helps with this. I am amazed at how similar your response to Armour was to my own. I started on Armour in 2007 and I was HEALTHY AGAIN. Good energy, normal weight, most pain gone, blood pressure good, the whole deal. Nine weeks later I hit some kind of brick wall and it all went away. I'm certain RT3 has to be a big piece of this puzzle. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > 1. Guest guest
That's cool Val! Thanks! Good to know that number for something to strive for. Guest guest
Raising your ferritin may improve your RT3 ratio. Will it improve it enough? As you said, that's something you won't know until you get your ferritin up. Low ferritin is one of the main causes of RT3. If the ferritin improvement does not resolve the RT3 issue, and you wish to pursue the T3-only route, I hope you have better luck with your Dr. than I did with mine. He sounds more reasonable than mine. I tried to get my Dr. to prescribe T3 in addition to NT. She would not, and wouldn't even discuss prescribing T3 only. If I was going to correct my RT3 problem, I had no choice but to self-treat. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > 1. Guest guest
Margery, thank you. I am filled with gratitude for you, Val, Nick, Josie, Jackie (and others who have written) for all of your help. You have helped me so much in the last few days. I think my doctor is " flexible " and open-minded, but just how much we will have to wait and see. If you don't mind, would like to ask you another question: So, until I get my ferritin up and confirm that my adrendals are stable with the averaged temperature tests (and if they are not, I will increase the HC to at least 20 mg per day), I should simply stay on some T4 (maybe half the 75 mcg Synthroid) each day with a lower dose of Cytomel (doc called in an Rx for 5 mcg tabs in light of my high pulse and heart palps and told me to start with 2-3 tabs 3 times a day and watch my pulse and temps)? (The 150 mg Erfa I was one had 20 mcg of T3 in it.) I know that I will have to deal with the fatigue and pain during this time. Then, after my labs (seeing doc about every 5-6 weeks and he is running labs before each visit), when my ferritin is at least 70 or close to it, if my rt3 is still somewhat high AND if I am still experiencing significant pain in the muscles/tendons in my feet, ankles, hands, wrists, near elbows and fatigue and brain fog, I then fight hard for T3 only treatment with the doctor, right? And if he won't go for it, I start it on my own carefully following the instructions on Nick's rt3 site. But, if we are forced to self-treat, how do we get our meds - the HC and the T3? Margery, thanks again for all of your help. I am honestly overcome with gratitude. I see a light ahead that I didn't see before, especially this weekend when I was having trouble even walking or lifting a glass of water. Thank you. Guest guest
I think you have thought this out very well, and this is what I do if I was in your situation. When I had no choice but to self-treat, I mail ordered HC and T3 - I posted a request for HC and T3 sources, which Val sent to me in a private email (we can't post the sources here on the board). I sure hope raising your ferritin will be enough to get you back on track. When my ferritin was low, raising it was a great benefit to me for many years - all through the 1990's, raising ferritin was all I needed to do. (I didn't realize at the time that it wasn't just the ferritin, directly, that was making me feel better, it was lowering my RT3, as well.) More recently, I've had to take a more aggressive anti-RT3 approach (T3-only), but I'm hoping the ferritin alone will do the job for you. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Please help me with these questions based on the background info below: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > 1.
