Guest guest
We also have a 7 yr. old son who had the same sleeping dilemnas. Then I learned that this is very common in children with ASD. Melatonin was recommended by all his specialists, and when we started using it, we felt we discovered gold!!! Not only did he sleep at a reasonable time, he slept better, therefore, had a much better day the following day. No side effects ever. I have tried several brands and the only one that does the trick for us is the one from Vitamin World (natural black cherry) in liquid form; we started with 1 mg. and have not had to increase it; you can mix it in juice or anything, or just straight. Give it about 45 minutes before you want him asleep. Hope this helps, AMS To: sList Sent: Sunday, December 2, 2012 8:12:07 AMSubject: Melatonin for 7 year old childHello, I am looking for feedback regarding the benefits and drawbacks of using melatonin for my 7 year old child with Aspergers. Guest guest
No negative side effects, but I did find that it lost its effectiveness over time. Our son was younger than 7. Guest guest
Melatonin works well with most kids, but for some it helps them to fall asleep but won't keep them asleep, so melatonin extended release might be better. Magnesium has also shown to help with sleep! Guest guest
My daughter has been on Melatonin since she was about 7 or 8. It helps remarkably in getting her to fall asleep. I vary the dosages depending on what she needs, other medications she may be on and how tired she might be when she wakes up in the morning... too much Melatonin and she seems a little " drugged " in the morning. Her psychiatrist allows me to go up to 9 mgs a night. I have used that much with her in the past, but right now she is on 6 mg... I try to find the extended release tablets as they seem to work best. The Melatonin has been a god-send! Before she started taking it, she would not fall asleep until 10 or 11 and would be completely exhausted the next day. I think some times people may have unusual dreams as a side effect. Good luck with your decision. Guest guest
Our experience with melatonin has been extremely positive. Our son could not sleep for more than 4-5 hours a day. He didn't start sleeping through the night until we started melatonin. We gave 2 mg 30 mins. before bed. We established a strong bedtime routine: take medicine, take a bath, bedtime story, then lights out. We used it for about 8 months, and he decided he didn't need it any more. He was 4. He said No, go to bed. He went to bed and went right to sleep. We have not had to use it in years, however, we do keep a fresh bottle on hand, just in case we need it again. Research brands, give it a trial run. Unless your son is taking other meds, it should be safe. We have never had any interactions, but we have never been on other meds at the same time. Good luck, I hope he is able to sleep peacefully soon! Jan > > Hello, > I am looking for feedback regarding the benefits and drawbacks of using melatonin for my 7 year old child with Aspergers. Guest guest
Hi, we tried this many times for our son. What we found is that it did help him to fall asleep. Our issue was with him staying asleep later than 5 am. It did not help for this issue. We tried different brands, strengths, sprays, liquids, etc. I do know that for many it has been very successful. Hope it helps. Jane Melatonin for 7 year old child Hello, I am looking for feedback regarding the benefits and drawbacks of using melatonin for my 7 year old child with Aspergers. Guest guest
Thanks everyone for responding. I spoke with my son's doctor, and she told me she uses melatonin with her own children (1 mg a night) and that I can start with 1 mg and see how he does with it, but not to give more than 3 mg a night. At her recommendation, I ordered a kosher melatonin pill called Mel-O-Chew off of Amazon. Hopefully, it will get here soon and I can start using it (and hopefully seeing some positive changes).
