Guest guest
This has saved our lives for several years. We tried it once with our 4 yo daughter but the dose was too low; she had no effect. Our neurologist recommended it again and we tried 1mg, powder, mixed in a drink. (she won't take pills). She slept 14 hours the first night, completely exhausted after years of not sleeping. She stopped sleeping easily at about a year old. We now use 3-6 mg; the only time it doesn't work is if she is highly anxious or excited about something. Our 5 yo son NEVER could fall asleep but he's never been diagnosed with anything but dyslexia and giftedness. We tried it the same night and ....miracle...he had an off switch. It was years of doing everything to get him to sleep and he just couldn't. Now, he has on " off " switch and gets rest. Both children had growth spurts when we used it for a year... they were finally getting rest. We wish we had tried it many, many years ago, if we had known what we do now. I hear B vitamins help clear grogginess the next morning if the children are affected this way. Ours wake up happy and rested. Occasionally, they complain of intense dreams (finally getting REM sleep?) Hope you find something to help you. If our children could take a whole pill, we would definitely use the extended release type.
Guest guest
Melatonin works for some kids wonderfully and others it does not. It certainly is safe, but the question is whether your child will benefit from it. If you do not see any benefits you can try GABA before bed. The sleeping issue is usually a serotonin imbalance. I would not recommend 5 HTP (although some kids are fine with it) Rosemary in an oil or as a tincture has high levels of serotonin. Guest guest
I just saw an episode of Dr Oz that has a difference of opinion about the safety of melatonin. I imagine anyone interested could google to find out the whole story, but it was quite interesting. Melatonin works for some kids wonderfully and others it does not. Guest guest
Hi ,Why don't you recommend the 5HTP? I'm just curious, last month my son's Dan Dr. suggested 50mg a day to raise his serotonin level for his impulse issues and it seems to be working. That and I also put 4lbs total wrist weights in his Backpack as per his teacher's suggestion and now he walks to his class every morning without any issues, it really made a difference.thanks, To: sList Sent: Tuesday, December 4, 2012 10:09 AM Subject: Melatonin Melatonin works for some kids wonderfully and others it does not. Guest guest
5HTP is the converted form of tryptophan. Some kids are not able to tolerate the 5HTP (and in fact some adults can't tolerate 5HTP for sleep issues...they bolt in the middle of the night)....In these cases tryptophan actually works better. It's the same thing - they both increase serotonin. That's great that your son is doing well on it. Hi ,Why don't you recommend the 5HTP? Guest guest
My son has been taking 5HTP for years now with great success. I have been giving it to him just before bed each evening and it works like a charm. I am thinking about adding it to his morning cocktail as well to help with impulse control. Guest guest
I don't ever mean to be contentious when I bring information to the table, just helpful. The sentiment I shared re: melatonin on the Dr. Oz program actually came from a sleep specialist. I happen to have a sleep problem personally, so I found it a very interesting perspective. No one person knows everything. Being your own advocate and student is always my best advice. With respect for ALL of us who are putting the puzzle together one day at a time, s Mahler http://www.theautismdoctor.com/melatonin-autism-and-dr-oz/ > > > >> > >> > >> Melatonin works for some kids wonderfully and others it does not.
