I don't think anyone should close the window of opportunity for a child....speech is a biomedical issue and can be addressed at anytime - but the earlier the better. Obviously early intervention has the greatest possibilities in the least amount of time frame when given what the body needs and trying to rebuild the biochemical pathways. Besides the well known therapies you want to look at the genetic mutations and fixing the foundational biochemistry in addition to addressing the biomedical issues to help this process.

MTHFR is a genetic mutation and it stands for Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase. Methyltetrahydrofolate is a folate that crosses the blood brain barrier (folic acid does not) so it can help the brain methylate. The methylation process is important for speech, language, auditory processing, reading comprehension. Getting folate in the brain is important to correct the "Cerebral Folate Deficiency". Studies have shown that 98% of children with autism have this genetic mutation defect; however the mutation is not exclusive to autism. Families who are susceptible to autoimmune disorders are also associated with the MTHFR anomaly. There are two prime variants called 677T and 1298C. What it means is that the biochemical pathways are weak and therefore glutathione is low and the body fails to excrete toxins very well. In other words our kids are running on a V6 instead of a V8 engine. Some kids have one or the other variant of the MTHFR and some have both. The 677T is usually associated with heart disease and stroke because of the conversion of homocysteine to Methionine. The 1298C variant is associated with chronic illnesses. Given all the toxins in our environment today it's important to look at addressing this issue with your child. Lab Corp has a blood test for the MTHFR; however, Amy Yasko has done extensive research in the area and she has a Genomic Test that gives the result on 30 different genetic mutations. Many of these genetic mutations have to do with the neurotransmitters dopamine and seratonin, sulphation, and pathways that generate ammonia - all critical issues for children with autism. Klaire Labs/Prothera has a remedy called Methylbalance which has the 5 methyltetrahydrofolate, Methylcobalamin B12, TMG, B2 and B6 - all key players in the methylation process; however, lithium is needed to transport folate into the brain, so it's important to check the lithium levels.

Here's the biomedical map on the methylation process

http://www.heartfixer.com/AMRI-Outcomes-Non-CV-Autism-Methyl%20Cycle.htm#MTHFR

You definitely want to normalize the foundational biochemistry before you start addressing the methylation process. The whole approach is a process. If you would like more information you can contact me.

My daughter is 5 yrs old. She's non verbal. She's using pecs. She can do a lot of things by herself. She very independent. She does not speak. She sometimes goes to sleep at 3am. She screams and throws lots of tantrums. A few people gave to me there is no hope if a child does not speak at the age of 4. Can someone please respond with your story . Thank you .

ann, I have two children on the spectrum. One of which is my daughter, Bianka. She is 11 years old. She started speaking at 4 years old. Please do not give up. Have faith and she will be just fine. She will speak. She might take longer than other children but she will speak. Do you have her in speech therapy? Early intervention is crucial for our children. If you want you can email me at marlyrb@.... MarlyFrom: ann

there is ALWAYS hope for your child. I am surprised someone told you that. I

hope they were not in the medical profession. I suggest you go to a neurologist

or geneticist.

im happy she can communicate with pecs.

is there a speech therapist in the picture?

more details please.

ann,Don't give up hope. The son of a friend of mine didn't speak ONE WORD until age 9. Today, in his upper teens, he is very conversational. Good luck.hildaTo: sList Sent: Tuesday, December 4, 2012 4:30:36 PMSubject: Is there hope for my daughter to speak

My friend's son did not speak until the age of 8. He did not even make the sound

" ma " or " pa " . He is in high school now. He can speak in sentences. He mostly

speaks when asked questions, not spontaneously, or to request something. And a

lot of it is echolalia and scripted self-talk but when he needs things, he will

ask for them verbally and using phrases or sentences. So I would say there is

hope.

My son is 8 and he is just starting to engage in reciprocal conversations and

spontaneous language. Today, his toy did not work and he called it " stupid toy " .

Dad told him not to use that word but between us we chuckled because it was the

first time he used a " bad " word, just like any other kid! (- :

Our son, now 17 has limited verbal skill's, but we feel he would have none if

not for verbal behavior and signing.

Contrary to what many may think, signing does not replace speech but can lead to

it.

As far a there being no hope because your child is a certain age, whoever told

you that is misinformed. Children learn every day, as do adults, it may be

slower and a little harder, but to say there is no hope is incorrect.

There is always hope for her. Never give up!... My daughter who is now 5 y.o and verbal did not start talking until age 4. Most medical professionals did not have that hope for her but she defied the odds against her. I would suggest based on the other positive abilities that she has to increase speech therapy with a more experienced and aggressive approach... You will have to get on your hands and knees to help her personally... It takes a lot of patience and techniques to get that speech out... Also intense behavioral therapy preferrably ABA can with the behavior as well as the speech... Try to help her to feel the vibration of your vocal cords when you speak so that she can try to imitate you..Singing I find is also a good place to start as well as Barney videos or any other children's

video with a lot of music with singing and movements....

All the best to you and your daughter!! Pls feel free to email me any further support in your journey...

I just wanted to add that my daughter, was a premature twin who didn't talka lot. There were many many moments of acting out. In those days (she and her twin brother will be thirty this Christmas! Yikes!) we didn't know all of the things that we do now. Anyway, she had lots and lots of speech therapy and all of a sudden I realizedthat the better her speech became the better her behavior. Our daughter has grown intoa normal, healthy, wonderful, and magnificent woman and Mom! YES THERE IS HOPE.When started in the pre-school handicapped program in NJ when she was threeno one believed that she could have this outcome...I am very grateful...good luck...andremember where there is love...the possibilities are

endless...

There is a grant to apply for a free Ipad. It has brought out so much language, fine motor skills etc for many of the children that I treat. And yes, there is always hope. Perhaps there is so much around this child that he/she (sorry) doesn't feel that they have to speak.
