Does your daughter receive speech therapy? Speech therapists are trained to for this specifically. I would recommend you contacting a therapist or clinic near you. There are therapists that take Medicaid. To: sList Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 11:36 AM Subject: Is there a tongue or mouth dr that teaches a child with autism to speak.

My daughter is autistic, non verbal. She's 5. I heard someone say that there is a dr that works with tongue, mouth exercise to stimulate speech . Does anyone know of the type of dr or referral I need. She has medicaid. Also I need a great neuroligist that will help. Please help me.

Your child needs speech and language therapy. You need to bombard her with language; play lots of music and sing with her, narrate ur activities, etc... A good therapist should be very helpful. She may have speech apraxia, which is something an SLP could help with. For a

non verbal 5 year old speech therapy twice a week is very minimal. You might

consider Verbal Behavior, a more natural type of ABA that can incorporate sign

language as a " bridge " to speech. Contrary to what many think signing leads to

speech for those that are capable.

There are no great neurologists, they can diagnose and prescribe and that all

I've ever seen any of them do.

I agree- any SLP should be able to do this. The Infant/toddler development specialist who comes to my home to work with my son said that sometimes for whateverreason, therapists don’t always do this unless you request it. At my son’s speech evaluation the SLP was talking about the things she would do with him and never once mentioned that- so I asked her about it and she said yes, she could do some muscle workwith him. But if I had never asked, I don’t think she would have done it! I'm sorry that you had to intervene. I have worked with some really amazing SLPs that usually look for that first as most of our kids have so many sensory issues with their mouths that it affects their nutrition and language. Any parent that is not pleased with their therapist for any reason should consult with the therapist first and then if not resolved then find another one. As an OT and parent of a child with autism, I have had to let therapists go and some have left on their own due to not being the right fit, scheduling conflicts etc. I have been really fortunate for the last 10 years though and have had the same OTs and now the same ST for the last 3 years and it is a relief everytime they come and I let them know constantly how grateful I am that they are such amazing professionals and

they care about my child and her progress. They were able to give me pointers in the past for her IEP and now there is so much carryover between school, home & community settings. To: "'sList '"

As an slp, not all therapists r trained to do oro-motor therapy and each therapist treats children differently. I am sorry that Cheryl did not have a therapist that worked with her and her child in all the necessary areas. However, not all therapists are good therapists and it is important to shop around and to tell the therapist ur concerns and wants. What area do u live in? If u are in palm beach or broward counties u should call either Audrey GreenBerg or Progressive therapy as they have the most experienced therapists. I do not work for either as work privately but have dealt with both these agencies. Good luck.
