Guest guest
Hi , I have a parent whose child I work with that was assessed by the school psychologist and the school wants to have an IEP to label him ASD. Mom and others do not feel that an IEP is needed at this time or that the diagnosis is accurate. Although she withdrew her consent to a meeting, the school is moving forward with the IEP next week. I know this is a tight timeline, but she really wants to bring an attorney to the meeting. Do you know of a good attorney to advocate for this parent or can you ask the others on the list? It would be much appreciated for a quick reply from anyone. Kathleen
Guest guest
Why doesn't she want an IEP? Having an IEP does not mean the child will be pulled to be placed in special education classrooms, if that's her fear. Rarely does a school "want" to give a child an IEP if there isn't something impacting their education. Stacey HoaglundFamily Support SpecialistFamily Network on DisabilitiesP.O. Guest guest
Keep in mind, if the parent brings an attorney; then the school district will bring an attorney as well. Undoubtedly, if this is the case...the date of this meeting will change. Guest guest
It takes a neurologist to determine the diagnosis not the school psychologist. Guest guest
There are many school psychologists who have the credentials to diagnose using diagnostic tools such as the ADOS. Guest guest
She should get her own private Psychologist to do an evaluation. I would bring it to the meeting as well if she agrees with the results. It takes a neurologist to determine the diagnosis not the school psychologist.
