One of my ASD son's, who has serious anxiety/ OCD, is taking fluvoxamine (anti-depressant), hydroxyzine pomoate (anti-histamine), and guanfacine (blood pressure) meds. They aren't working, and seem to have made him worse. He's more on the manic side now, with horrible panic attacks (especially in the car- he opens his car door and screams). We're thinking about trying something that has a more sedating effect, to keep him calm. I was reading about passionflower as a possible natural alternative. Has anyone had experience with this supplement, for calming a hysterical child?

A more effective solution would be B5 pantothenic acid for the anxiety (500 mg. and you can take up to 4 a day depending on his need); however, the manic issues you should have his lithium levels tested. Lithium oratate by Advanced Research at the Vitamin shoppe or on line will help him stop the mood swings and manic behaviors. If he's low lithium you'll need to supplement enough to get the levels up. Usually it takes about 60 mg. of lithium to get the levels into normal range. Most natural lithium supplements are usually about 5 mg. per tab of lithium. Also to help keep the OCD down you might want to try Inositol found in the health food store. You can contact me for more information if you need to. I'm not sure how old you son is and if he's in puberty, which can make these behaviors intensify.

My son doesn't take those, but he takes Lexapro for anxiety/depression and has been for years. It works well if you give a low dose.He recently started taking Lithium 5 mg. orotate which helps a lot. It's also a really low dose and is over the counter medicine. Plusvitamin supplements like vitamin D, etc. It sounds like he needs some bipolar medicine added and you need to see a psychiatristfor that. I went to the health food store today and the owner recommended 'Rescue Remedy' by Bach. I asked him about passionflowers, and he said this has some in it, but thought it would be more effective. Has anyone had any luck with this product (in reducing extreme anxiety, impulsivity (throwing their body on the ground or trying to escape out a moving car), and screaming hysterically?

Rescue Remedy can be an effective remedy in the moment if you are seeing a meltdown in younger children. Children in puberty (or the behaviors you are describing) need something stronger and something that needs to be taken on a daily basis to support the adrenals as well as deal with the behaviors. GABA is good for Anxiety, aggressiveness and inability to sleep; Pantothenic Acid is very good for high anxiety; SAMe is improves the mood, stops aggression and angry behaviors; Lithium is for mood swings and depression (which in autism comes out often times as anger); Oxytocin helps improve the mood ; L-theanine is calming more for someone with mood issues and of course there are combos of different herbs, but the amino acids, B5 (pantothenic acid) and the hormone Oxytocin I feel are much stronger and more effective. Amy Yasko has a stress foundation RNA and a Nerve Calm RNA which are also very helpful.

Can you take these supplements while still on prescription meds, or do you need to wean them off first? Are certain combinations more effective, than taking them separately?
