When I went to my appt, I just took all the paperwork I had and let the SSA rep ask me what she wanted and if I didn't know the answer, I would dig through the pile of papers until I found something that answered her question. I was going through a particularly brain-dead phase at that time, but she was very patient and just kept directing me. I, too, had heard that you always got denied the first time, and I thought it was probably pointless to apply since I knew I'd never have the energy or cognitive capacity to appeal. I went to the appt thinking it was a waste of time. But my application was approved within 3 months. If you have worked and have paid FICA taxes into the system, you want SSDI not SSI. SSDI usually pays more, depending on your employment contributions. But [when I went] they automatically fill out applications for both. I guess some people can collect from both, if they haven't paid enough FICA in to be over a certain limit. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, just trying to give you a real-life example.
