I was told that we need to add because eventually the T3 pushes the T4 way down. I have talked to several people that do this and do well because we both neeed T4 and T3 because of the converion process. That the liver and other tissues in the body help wth converting T4 to T3 along with thyroid gland. There is nothing in the body that needs T4 directly as far as we are aware. There are quite a few of us who have been on T3 only for a long time and are doing very well on it Nick -- for more information on RT3 and Thyroid Resistance go to www.thyroid-rt3.com

And I have seen them, but they aren't on this forum. :-) If you have rt3 issues, you don't want to be taking ANY t4 at all. You should get a rt3 test and see what your ratio of ft3 to rt3 is. Maybe you CAN convert and simply aren't on enough meds. With a ft4 of .9 it is no wonder your ft3 would be low, even if you were converting! As an example, my ft4 is always about 1.2 to 1.4 but my ft3 is at the very bottom of the range. Barely in range as I don't convert and most of the t4 turns into rt3. I'm curious what your rt3 is since your ft3 is still in range even with a ft4 of .9. Maybe you just simply need more thyroid hormones, period. Your doc is likely medicating you based on your TSH which is the stupid thing to do but it's what most endos do. Leave people undermedicated. But yes, you could simply just go on straight t3 as well. I personally think if one can convert and does NOT have a rt3 problem, then why not try the natural thyroid meds as it is more what our own bodies would do. Have you done the graphing of temps 3 times a day? That will help to show if you are on enough cortef or not.
