Guest guest
Bertasaid: The D.O. I'm using now thinks metals are a possible trigger for Graves' and I tested high in mercury and lead, so I have started chelation. The eyes are doing better right now, but it's probably too soon to be sure. I'll post something when I'm more sure of what's happening and how it turns out. Oh Berta!!! This is something I'm really interested in hearing about and if it really makes you feel better! Please do share with us as you feel things are working or not! I'm not sure if anyone has already suggested Omega 3 and antioxidants... you could ask your DO about this too... but these items have really helped a lot of us. Oh and there is something else I did when my eyes were bothering me - not as bad as yours - but it helped me a lot - it's called craniosacral and it's an energy work. I *think* it's different from your chiropractors cervical manipulation - in fact I'm sure it is... she would put her hands on my face and eyes, gently move the bones a little to release energy or allow energy to flow where it needs too... she got my eyes to stop twitching and flickering and the pain to go away. Hope some of this helps! Pam B. Diagnosed 12/01 (hyper with both graves and hashimotos antibodies) Mostly alternative treatments - doing better. Actually I've taken fish oil for a long time and usually bought the inexpensive variety. I'm wondering if that may have been one of the sources of the mercury. I'll definitely let you know how the chelation turns out. Thus far I've had 4 treatments. The eyes are in focus much more then they were before I started, and I haven't noticed any bad side effects. So I'm very hopeful that the improvement continues and stays. The craniosacral your doing is very interesting. Keep us advised on how it works for you. Never know what might be worth trying. Fish has been a big part of my diet for a long time. Mostly frozen, but quite a lot of canned too. And I've taken fish oil supplements for a long time, probably about 10 years. Now I've heard that some of the supplements are contaminated with mercury. > Out of curiousity, were you working with any crafts? I worked with metals for about 15 years. My husband and I were making falconry equipment. Mostly swivels and bells worn by trained hawks and falcons. It is mostly stainless steel, nickel, copper and zinc, but some other alloys too. It is highly polished, like jewelry, so there were abrasives, solvents and polishes that I now would be a great deal more careful with. I really wouldn't have expected mercury or lead in those materials, though. My husbands levels test slightly elevated, but much lower than mine. The only lead paint exposure I've been able to think of was while tearing the siding off an old garage on our property that we wanted to demolish. The paint was pretty oxidized and flaky. I tried to keep the chips cleaned up because I suspected that it was lead paint and didn't want it mixed into the ground. It just could have been dusty enough to do it. Incidentally, I understand that the EPA and OSHA now have different standards for what it considered lead free paint, and lead free does not necessarily mean that it doesn't have any lead in it. Guest guest
Bertta, I'm curious about this mercury thing. Did your doc do tests and found out you had unusually high levels of mercury? Is this something they normally do? I've not heard of this at all except in this forum. I'm a little concerned about my fish oil capsules as well. I get them from GNC. How do you know if something has mercury in it? That binds with the metals and they are excreted. The urine for the following 6 hours is tested. > Is this something they normally do? No, I don't think it's usual unless there are symptoms of acute poisoning. I really don't know what the position of the AMA is. The NIH has numerous webpages on mercury, and acknowledges damage done by exposure, so I don't know why it's ignored by the medical community. In searching on the web for information, I did find that chelation is done more frequently in Europe than in the US. > I'm a little concerned about my fish oil capsules as well. I've read (but now can't find the article) that the mercury has to be processed out of the fish oil, and that not all manufactures do that. If I find that document, I'll post again. Since fish is so contaminated, that does make sense. I've started using a supplement my doctor sells. It's by Vital Nutrients and the label states it is tested for rancidity, mercury, PCB's and EPA and DHA levels. I've seen colloidal vitamin/mineral supplement for sale that list mercury, lead, arsenic and a few other not so desirable things on the label. How do you know if something has mercury in it? I haven't found a good comprehensive list. The most frequently mentioned things are fish, thermometers, fluorescent lights, old batteries, paint made before 1991, fungicides, thermostats, some electrical switches and dental amalgam. But there are some things you'd would really not suspect like some lighted athletic shoes. I found one report on a number of workers poisoned while making a skin lightening cosmetic cream. So it has been in quite a range of things. A child in my community was poisoned. She and her family moved into an apartment in which a previous occupant had spilled mercury on the carpet. The whole family had elevated levels, but the child playing on the floor was heavily contaminated. So accidental exposure can happen too. Guest guest
Thanks for the response, Bertta. Scary stuff... Guest guest
Is this a brand name, or just something you get locally?
