I am sorry that you have diabetes but if you ever want

to talk about it please feel free to contact me. I

have only been diagnosed about a year and a half now

but both my parents had it so I have more than 30

years knowledge behind me.

Joyce,

I had very unstable blood sugars when I was on prednisone. It didn't stop until I was on less than 20mg. It was very unpredicable. It didn't seem to matter what I ate, though in general I stuck to a low carb diet and I do believe it helped.

From the first day I was on the iv steroids in the hospital and then on the oral pred at home my doctor at the time had me test my blood sugar twice a day and when it was over a specific limit I injected myself with a few units of Humulin insulin.

As I said it was unpredictable but in general I had to use insulin 3 or 4 days a week. One thing I do remember was the days I got the most exercise I had the best, closest to normal blood sugar readings.

I've read that people (like me) who get prednisone induced diabetes are at high risk for Type 2 diabetes in general. So far though since I've been off the prednisone, I've been fine. I continue to test my blood sugar once in awhile just to be sure and it's been as normal as can be.

Hope that helps!

Pink, has type 2 and when he exercises he doesn't have a problem. He controls his with diet. One time he lost 42 pounds and it was gone... when he found the weight he had lost it came back.  Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida,  IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet, when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

The reality is that a diabetes exercise and diet program would benefit

us all. I think when doctors prescribe high dosages of prednisone they

should at the same time prescribe other things, including a nutritionist

referral. It still doesn't make diabetes necessarily avoidable but helps

and makes it far more manageable.
