Guest guest
Irene: I am sorry that you have diabetes but if you ever want to talk about it please feel free to contact me. I have only been diagnosed about a year and a half now but both my parents had it so I have more than 30 years knowledge behind me. Guest guest
Joyce, I had very unstable blood sugars when I was on prednisone. It didn't stop until I was on less than 20mg. It was very unpredicable. It didn't seem to matter what I ate, though in general I stuck to a low carb diet and I do believe it helped. From the first day I was on the iv steroids in the hospital and then on the oral pred at home my doctor at the time had me test my blood sugar twice a day and when it was over a specific limit I injected myself with a few units of Humulin insulin. As I said it was unpredictable but in general I had to use insulin 3 or 4 days a week. One thing I do remember was the days I got the most exercise I had the best, closest to normal blood sugar readings. I've read that people (like me) who get prednisone induced diabetes are at high risk for Type 2 diabetes in general. So far though since I've been off the prednisone, I've been fine. I continue to test my blood sugar once in awhile just to be sure and it's been as normal as can be. Hope that helps! One time he lost 42 pounds and it was gone... when he found the weight he had lost it came back. Guest guest
Joyce The reality is that a diabetes exercise and diet program would benefit us all. I think when doctors prescribe high dosages of prednisone they should at the same time prescribe other things, including a nutritionist referral. It still doesn't make diabetes necessarily avoidable but helps and makes it far more manageable. > > From: Beth mbmurtha@... > Subject: Re: diabetes > To: Breathe-Support > Date: Sunday, December 21, 2008, 6:02 PM > > > > > > > > > > Joyce, > I had very unstable blood sugars when I was on prednisone.
