Guest guest
Sue, I've had nerve blocks done for the genitofemoral nerve but not in my spinal area. Mine was in the actual area between the leg and vulvar area. It hurt for a few minutes but then would stop hurting. The blocks would last me for a month. I found out later that what I had done was a trigger point injection which basically blocks the muscle and not the nerve which explained why the medication only worked for a month. This Pain Management doctor that you are seeing, is he an interventional Pain Management doctor? I would recommend asking a ton of questions of this doctor if they are an interventional Pain Management doctor. One of the questions I would ask is about the rate of infection with the procedure. I could have had a block done in my spinal area at L1 and L2 (my problem is this area as well because of the genitofemoral and ilioinguinal nerves) but I decided not to because of the risk for infection since I'm already so prone to infections. My doctors (my regular Pain Management doctor and my gynecologist) both agree that it's not a good idea. And my gynecologist told me that when she read the letter from the clinic where I would have gone to get it done if I did it that she got the feeling that they thought it would be too risky as well. Guest guest
Sue, Then the injection he's suggesting is the one I've had every month (up until the last shot in Nov) which is a trigger point injection which only blocks muscle. But with this injection it did not affect my clitoris at all. The fact that this doctor was rushed really bothers me and I would recommend trying to find someone else because when it comes to a Pain Management doctor that is experienced with treating vulvodynia you need someone who can take their time in answering questions. I'm not familiar with the cream that combines the Elavil and baclofen. I did see some other creams that include Lidocaine listed here thanks to Chelle(something that helps me very much, and for those that are sensitive to the normal base it can be compounded with something else) that I might consider and ask my Pain Management doctor and gynecologist about. But please let me know what happens with this doctor that you see again. Kristy ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Sick sense of humor? Guest guest
Sue, Glad that he's not a regular Pain Management doctor, but the block that he wants to do does indeed have a risk for infection. It's part of what they call a paraspinal block which breaks down in to either a nerve root or facet joint block. Did he tell you if it was a nerve root block or a facet joint block? There's a difference between the two. I would recommend getting another opinion to see what other options are available to you for pain control before making a decision on this treatment course. I can tell you how to know if the pain is coming from your genitofemoral nerve even without the block. Can you tell me where your symptoms are coming from? I'll explain to you how to know if it's the genitofemoral nerve. Does any of the pain occur around your groin area and radiate down your leg? My vulvar problem with my genitofemoral (because of the surgery I had to my vulvar area) is on the left side.
