Ask your doctor to schedule you for a diabetes education class or to see a diabetes educator. It is hard for anyone to tell someone else what to eat or what their blood glucose goals should be since diabetes is different for all of us. Your doctor will set goals for you based on your overall health. Until you can get into a class or talk to an educator/nutritionist, you should cut back on the amount of food you are eating, especially carbs. You may want to consider eating 5 small meals instead of 3 larger ones. If you are not already doing so, you need to start an exercise program, but with your doctor's approval. The Joslin Diabetes Center website is one that I used when first diagnosed. Here is the link to the beginner's guide. You may also want to review the information in the Joslin Diabetes Library. _http://www.joslin.org/Beginners_guide.asp_ (http://www.joslin.org/Beginners_guide.asp) There is a lot of information available about diabetes. Don't let it overwhelm you. You will do okay, but just take it one day at a time. hugs Eunice
Guest guest
Hi, You apparently are considered to be a type II Diabetic if the doctor put you on Glucophage instead of insulin. Your blood sugar levels are extremely high. Did the doctor explain to you where the normal levels should be and send you to a nutritionist? If not, you may need to find a new doctor (in my opinion) Your tiredness, and blurred vision is probably from your levels being so high. If and when your levels come down, you should start feeling better. I know the group has been talking about what normal levels are, but you should be somewhere between 70-120 fasting in A.M. and no higher than 190 or so two hours after a meal. Damage to your eyes and organs can happen when levels above 200 are for extended period of time. I hope they get you under control and you can learn more about Diabetes. Hang in there, it will get better. Anything with Carbohydrates will make your levels go up. Avoid starchy foods, bread, or anything sweetened with sugar. Good luck Shellie Vickie & Dean wrote: hi. Guest guest
Actually, damage can occur at BGs over 140 for an extended time - and each time they go higher than this, you are slowly doing little bits of damage - even for short periods. I wouldn't feel comfortable at all if every day, I spiked up to 180 just because I was back down to 120 several hours later . . . . . No more than 140 1 hour post meal No more than 120 2 hours post meal is a good rule of thumb. Guest guest
400-585 for BG levels, and all they gave you was Glucophage? Wow!! I guess a lot of Drs. are lacking Diabetes knowledge... That is a DANGEROUS level to be at. If you have Insurance, I would see about seeing someone else and getting some Help for this. This is your life you are talking about, and Diabetic issues that come along with High BG is no Fun.. I was always thinking Sugars that high, need Insulin, or at least at first to get them to where they do not do a lot of Harm to someone. Like I said, if I were you, I would get a better DR. And then go from there. Good Luck. ~~TINA~~ -- Re: just found out i have diabetes Why do doctors to this? They hit you with the news, send you to the pharmacy to get a meter and expect you to do the rest. I too just found out last week and was given NO info. I was referred to a nutritionist but won't see him/her until March 14. So group, please help us newbies!!! patti Vickie & Dean wrote: hi. Guest guest
Thats how my doctors was. (HI, you have diabetes, poke yourself with this, take these pills, see u in 3 months. ) No info on goals or anything. I switched doctors and now I am doing great. She LISTENS and EXPLAINS stuff. It funny how much of a difference this makes. I would reccomend a new doctor first off. Diabetes can do alot of damage, I know that, from what I have been told, as I had diabetes way before i was diagnosed, I have some kidney damage. I have protein in my urine(kidneys not filtering properly) and got frequent dehydration and kidneyinfections. Since I have got my bs under control, there has been very little protein and few and far between kidney infections. Things will get better. > > Why do doctors to this? Guest guest
Keeping track of what you're eating, and your BG is just a small part of it. You need to make sure and get plenty of excercise, and watch what you do... And a lot of times, people cannot keep their BG under control without a pill or two. Even when people can, things can happen in your life to alter that, but that is important why when you can, to take care of your Diabetes now, and be pro-active to protect you and your legs, eyes, heart, etc. in the future. ~~TINA~~ -- Re: just found out i have diabetes OH MY GOSH! That is really scary info. My BG was 187 when I woke up this moring, 143 right before lunch (7 hrs after breakfast). I have been charting for 5 days now and go back to see my doc in 2 1/2 weeks with the info. Just what kind of damage are we talking about??? I was given 0 info when I left the office!! patti Sandy wrote: Actually, damage can occur at BGs over 140 for an extended time - and each time they go higher than this, you are slowly doing little bits of damage - even for short periods.
