DO SOME SAINT BERNARD DOGS REALLY HAVE DRY MOUTHS?

YES, ALTHOUGH NO DOG OF ANY BREED HAS A TOTALLY DRY MOUTH (ALL SALIVATE, AND THE AMOUNT VARIES WITH TEMPERATURE, ACTIVITY, ETC.) THERE ARE SAINT BERNARDS WHO DO NOT PRODUCE COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF SNOTTY DROOL IN STRINGS THAT HANG FROM THE SIDES OF THEIR MOUTH. THESE DRY MOUTH SAINTS WOULD BE CLOSE TO THE NORM IN THIS REGARD WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER DOG BREEDS.

WHY DO SOME SAINT BERNARD DOGS HAVE DRY MOUTHS WHILE MOST DON'T?

A FEW SAINT BERNARDS HAVE LOWER LIPS THAT ARE NOT PENDANT. THEY DO NOT DROOP AND HANG OUTWARD FORMING A POCKET. THESE SAINTS HAVE DRY MOUTHS.

MANY SAINTS DO HAVE LIPS THAT FORM THIS POCKET. WHEN A POCKET IS FORMED BY THE LOWER LIP, THE NORMAL SECRETIONS FOUND IN THE DOGS MOUTH ARE NOT SWALLOWED, BUT FORM A POOL THAT BECOME A SNOTTY DROOL THAT OFTEN HANGS IN STRINGS FROM THEIR LOWER LIPS. THE AMOUNT OF THE DROOL WILL VARY SOMEWHAT WITH THE SIZE OF THE POCKET.

ARE DRY MOUTH SAINT BERNARDS IN SOME WAY OUTSIDE OF OR FORBIDDEN BY THE BREED STANDARD?

NO, AS A MATTER OF FACT THE ORIGINAL SAINT BERNARD BREED STANDARD ADOPTED IN 1888 AND IN EFFECT UNTIL 1955 IN THE UNITED STATES , STATED EXPLICITLY THAT ,"THE LOWER LIP MUST NOT BE PENDANT" IF THIS HAD BEEN STRICTLY ADHERED TO ALL SAINTS WOULD HAVE DRY MOUTHS TODAY.

UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS LARGELY IGNORED AS IS REFLECTED IN THE GENERAL POPULACE OF THE BREED.

EVEN THOUGH THE CURRENT STANDARD ALLOWS A PENDENT LOWER LIP, IT DOES NOT DEMAND IT. IN FACT IT STILL DIRECTS THAT "THE FLEWS OF THE LOWERS JAW MUST NOT BE DEEPLY PENDANT"

WHERE CAN I FIND A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL BREED STANDARD FOR SAINT BERNARDS?

THE ORIGINAL SAINT BERNARD BREED STANDARD WAS ADOPTED BY THE SWISS IN 1887. THIS SWISS STANDARD WITH ONLY MINOR CHANGES WAS ADOPTED ON JUNE 2, 1888 BY THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS AT ZURICH, SWITZERLAND. BOTH ARE REPRODUCED IN HUGH DALZIEL'S 1888 BOOK, "THE SAINT BERNARD: IT'S HISTORY, POINTS, BREEDING, AND REARING" COPIES MADE FROM THAT BOOK ARE AVAILABLE ON THIS WEBSITE.

THE AMERICAN TRANSLATION USED UNTIL 1955 IS RECORDED IN DENLINGER'S 1952 BOOK, "THE COMPLETE SAINT BERNARD"

THE AMERICAN STANDARD AS REVISED IN 1955 CAN BE FOUND IN THE UPDATED VERSION OF THE SAME BOOK TITLED "THE NEW COMPLETE SAINT BERNARD" PUBLISHED IN 1966.

I am still looking for a dog which I can train for mobility assistance. I have been looking since last August/September. I have seen so many dogs. The ones that I've met which have been listed on Petfinder as large dogs are more like medium-large, if that is a category. Of course, If I were 3 or 4 inches shorter, those medium-large dogs would probably be just right. On Sunday, I got to meet a dog named Lola. She's in foster care. Her foster mom said that they think she is a Mastiff/pit bull mix. She was a really nice dog, just not tall enough. One of the group members in my service dog group suggested that a Great Dane might be a better choice for me. I did find a Great Dane puppy by first looking at the akc.org web site. He was a gorgeous puppy named Trooper. If you go to this page: http://www.exquisitedanes.com/harl%20litters.htmYou can see his picture.Notice that the breeder offers him with limited registration for $600 and for full registration, $1200. I made an offer to her that I could pay her $200 then $60/month until the balance was paid. She declined my offer, and countered with a 4 year old female who has been retired from breeding and has already been spayed, for $200. If you go to the picture of the puppy, then click on the link called Females, she will be the first female, named Sadie The breeder breeds for longevity and says that the average life expectancy of her dogs is 9-13 years. Even so, 4 years is kind of old if it takes 18 months to train her to do the work I need, I'm just not sure if she would be able to work much longer.Donna in

Yup... BUTTAS!!!! even better

when their upper lip covers that lower lip.. can turn the upper

lip into eye shades for sleeping... Buster does.. LOL..  Rolls

over on his back.. all four legs in the air... upper lips

flopped back up over his eyes..

OHHHHH but when he starts snoring like that... You've seen the

cartoons where the lips flap as they snore.. I'm pretty sure the

idea for that came from Buster!.. LOL

Now, I've never heard myself snore (though tells me that I

can.. and very loudly).. When Buster, Zucco, Earl & get

started.. it's just one long buzz saw going all night long..  I

could almost make one of those "beatbox" music tracks out of

their snoring.. <grin>

When my hubby told me I snored, and had episodes where I'd stop breathing, I told my neuro who ordered a sleep study for me. They discovered I have sleep apnea, and I use a C-PAP now. No more loud snores for me! If I do, it is 'masked by the mask'! lol.I just love your description of Buster. Give your puppies hugs for me.love,KateTo: MSersLife Sent: Fri, April 15, 2011 8:43:35 AMSubject: Re: I knew I read about this........ :-)Re: mobility assistance dog search continues

back in 1977 it was really hot and humid in St Louis - Grace had sent a blow up inter tube with a thingee across the middle - I put a recieving blanket over it and put him in it on the floor - when I took him upstairs for bed I left it down stairs - I came back down - Dummy Dog was flat on his back in all his glorry - imagine a red cocker spaniel with 4 legs in the air on an orange inner tube - you got it God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

My grand dog in Jefferson City, MO is a King Spaniel - he will be 8 in September - my son told me a few years ago Reagan snored so he was banished from the master - doesn't bother Reagan - he and Gypsy the Golden sleep outside my grand daughter's door

Peaches the cat snores too - during the day when I take unscheduled naps and snore she leaves the room highly upset God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

I did ask , when he told me

that I snore (I think it's genetic <grin>), if he noticed

that I also stopped breathing.. or it seemed I hesitated much

between snores.. because the X used to do that.. snore, snore,

snore.. nothing... nothing.. nothing.. Donna reaches out to

shake him... snore.. snore... snore... Yup, he has sleep apnea

as well.. Used to scare the beejeebers out of me too.. Don't

know why I didn't realize it was sleep apnea.. but at some point

he either mentioned falling asleep watching television, or while

waiting to unload his concrete.. with the truck running and all

that noise..OR.. CDL licensing in PA requires the sleep studies

now.. not sure which, but he's got the C-Pap as well..

I wanderer off.... when asked if this was happening.. he

said that it wasn't.. so.. I guess it just seems to happen, when

I've snuggled into his back, and my face is right next to his

ear.. at least that's how he sez it happens..

I know that my neurologist has asked if I have trouble

sleeping.. and I told him that I usually don't.. there are times

when I just can't get to sleep or stay that way (that's usually

when something is worrying me).. that don't involve the

revolving bathroom door thing.. but they aren't frequent.. Thank

goodness is willing to not only get me to my appointments,

but he goes IN with me.. even to the PCP... because there have

been times when he has had to contradict my answer to the

doctor's questions..

He even point blank looked at my neurologist on Monday, and told

him that if he insisted that I take the 4th Keppra he was

bringing me to the neurologists house to live.. cause I get

downright MEAN.. taking the 4th.. so I guess all I can handle is

1500mg of Keppra a day.. Surprised the doc though.. he said he's

got some using 7 or 9 thousand milligrams a day.. But then he

also decided that this "new" pain I've been experiencing isn't

something that Keppra takes care of anyway.. so he upped my

Baclofen by 20mg, and changed the dosing schedule.. (10-20-10-20

-- morning, noon, evening, bedtime)..

Oh, and I will give the muttleys a hug for you.. they are both

characters.. distinct personalities as well.. and Buster is so

very very very trusting... he's spread out, on his side, with

his butt and a portion of his back, resting against the rollers

on the bottom of my chair.. definitely trusting..

Zucco.. oh he's funny too.. when he has to go outside, or he

needs a bowl filled.. only in the evening.. (he'll stay in his

chair, sleeping.. all day long.. until he has to go potty).. but

in the evening.. once is home.. Zucco will come to me,

(otherwise he's in his chair).. get my attention.. then go sit

in the middle of and I.. facing us both.. and looking back

and forth between us.. he'll look at me, until I tell that

Zucco has to go out.. then his gaze will turn to .. if

doesn't move immediately (or as quickly as Zucco thinks he

should.. he does give him time to respond).. Zucco will look at

me again.. and give out a short bark.. at which point I'm

expected to tell once again that Zucco has to go out.. all

the while Zucco is watching me till I DO tell .. then Zucco

will turn his head, and watch again.. and that will

continue for a long long time.. until Zucco decides he's done

waiting.. and then he'll stand up.. and do the "puppy bounce"

[he is 7 years old] on his front legs.. only front legs.. up and

down.. head on the floor between his V's front paws.. which are

to the elbows flat on the floor.. butt way up in the air..  Just

like in the Disney cartoon.. Fox & the Hound.. the one where

the little brown & white puppy does the "I'm a Hound Dawg"

line..

I swear though, they sleep all day to save up their energy to

play with & Earl all evening.. Buster steals Earl's

blanket.. even tried to do it BEFORE Earl fell asleep the other

night.. he actually pulls them off of Earl and onto the floor

(at least a large portion of the blanket) and lays on them..

Earl said he swears that Buster does that.. then gets up and

goes into our bedroom and climbs up in bed.. but Earl's blanket

is still on the floor.. LOL..

When I had Cassie [the Dane].. Earl was much younger.. and he

did things, not nasty things, not hurtful things, but things to

piss her off... she'd wait for him to go outside, and me to not

be paying attention.. then she'd go into Earl's bedroom, climb

up on his bed and pee on it!...

There is never really a dull moment around this house..

female who has

been retired

from breeding

and has

already been

spayed, for

$200.  If you

go to the

picture of the

puppy, then

click on the

link called

Females, she

will be the

first female,

named Sadie

The breeder

breeds for

longevity and

says that the

average life

expectancy of

her dogs is

9-13 years.

Even so, 4

years is kind

of old if it

takes 18

months to

train her to

do the work I

need, I'm just

not sure if

she would be

able to work

much longer.
