Guest guest
Yes, the best thing ANY person can do is to avoid refined foods, such as white rice, white flour, etc. This applies even more so for diabetics. I'm sure that you've heard many times the expression " your mileage may vary " . This is why I'm saying that for ME, I can tolerate the chocolate ice cream, but not oatmeal or falafel. Each of our bodies are different. I'm curious as to how you have both type 1 and type II diabetes? I understand how someone with type II diabetes can eventually become type I as their pancreas wears out and no longer produces enough insulin. What about in your case? I am not a " true " type I diabetic. By that, I mean that I became diabetic seven years ago after reacting badly to some betamethasone (a type of steroid) while living in Saudi Arabia. From then my C-peptide tests usually hang around 1.0 – not enough insulin being produced to sustain me (or any person), but just enough to keep me out of DKA… Well, at least most of the time (sheepish grin). Because this came on later in life, I've had to also deal with resistance. I'm overweight and had to retrain my body to recognize insulin better. Within weeks of following the Bernstein diet, my blood sugar levels hovered around 5.0 (that's about 95 to 100 for y'all Americans). Before being admitted to the hospital in February, I hadn't been very careful with my diabetes control – especially since couldn't test myself or give myself insulin… If I felt symptoms of high blood sugars, I find a neighbor to help me out. Anyway, the point is I went in with an HbA1c of over 15, and in the space of six weeks I have thankfully been able to get it down to a 7.1. My goal is to get it further down to at least six, then start refining my diet and habits a bit more (at least to the extent that I can, given where I'll be living). It amazes me how you have lived such a life while dealing with cystic fibrosis and all that comes with it. The island that my family comes from is a noted cluster for cystic fibrosis so I've seen several childhood friends, relatives and acquaintances constantly battle for their lives or die of it. God must have had some awesome plans for you! (Maybe it was so you can look over us.) Guest guest
Dear , at least I had the advantage of having parents who wereable to get me the very best medical care from my premature birth on.I learned to take responsibility for my own body and its quirks early on.MS was in many respects the least of what I had to adapt to. I do not haveboth Type I and Type II diabetes; Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes has characteristics of both; so one has both some lack of insulin productionand some resistance to the insulin that is produced. I have a dear friendwho has both MS and Diabetes who can go into a very high blood sugarsurge after eating one little serving of white rice; I just do not eat highly refined products. I, like you, do have high blood glucose on any cortico-steroid--as does most everyone; the difference is that for us, this poseslasting danger that does not go away after the steroid dosage has ceased. Can you tell us more about "the Bernstein Diet?"Also, and it is o.k. to respond to this privately to me, would you considertelling me what island you do come from, with its high rate of Cystic Fibrosis?Love and hope to you and to all who are here with us,n, with a host of genedically inherited conditions; I live near San Francisco, California, but come from one Italian-origin mother and one Spanish-origin father; I am nearly 74, and am far from the oldest personwith Cystic Fibrosis in the United States! To: MSersLife Sent: Mon, April 25, 2011 6:06:46 PMSubject: Re: reply to 's post re: diabetes Yes, the best thing ANY person can do is to avoid refined foods, such as white rice, white flour, etc. This applies even more so for diabetics.
