Guest guest
On October 10th I started a mercury detox using AMD Heavy Metal Detox Vitamin-Mineral Supplement and Cilantrogen Herbal Formula. Yesterday I happened to read the ingredients for the AMD which include 20 mcg Iodine. I couldn't believe that my homeopathic md is having me use this! I know I'll be getting comments about changing docs again, but there are not a lot of choices around Boise where I live, so I am using a combination of the " best " endo in town, along with the " best " integrative/homeopathic md. I looked through the archives and read Pam L.'s post (#19363) that said .150 mcg is the amount of iodine we need daily. There's 20 mcg in the AMD! She also had info about how excess iodine interferes with the effectiveness of ATD's. I'm on PTU. I've stopped using the AMD Metal Detox, and I'm sending off an e-mail to my homeopathic doc. Now I'm wondering how much damage I've done my taking the AMD. This is a reminder to all to check what's in the supplements we take. . Diagnosed 8/22/02; on PTU and homeopathic/herbal remedies; doing better.
Guest guest
Hi - If it turns out to be 20 micrograms of iodine, that really isn't too bad. The RDA is 150 micrograms, but the ideal iodine intake in individuals can range from 50 mcg a day on up. Better to be on the lower side if we are hyper. It's something we have to experiment with. It is very confusing. If you already get more iodine than you should in just your diet, then 20 mcg more might not be a good idea. I depends on how much this product is helping you. You always have to weigh the benefits against the possible downsides. We need to get ENOUGH iodine, but not more than our bodies need. That being said, it's rough trying to figure out our daily iodine intake as it is. Even some of the lists we find on the internet are given in parts per billion, or or something I personally cannot figure out. I found one list that is based on micrograms per 100 grams of a certain food item. But how much food is in 100 grams? I grew up with ounces and pounds as measures. It's next to impossible to find say how many micrograms of iodine in 3 medium sized shrimp. Shellfish is generally high in natural iodine, as is kelp or other seaweed forms of food. Some people do better with a small amount or natural iodine in their diets. To completely remove all iodine from our diets these days is next to impossible. But we shouldn't completely eliminate iodine anyway. Iodized salt is usually a chemical version of iodine (potassium iodide) added to table salt. It contains 76 micrograms of iodide per gram of salt - how close that is to a teaspoon of salt is beyond my capabilities - LOL! Watch out for foods that contain carrageenan, alginates, agar agar - which are all seaweed derivatives and high in iodine. Also FD&C Red Dye No. 3 is iodine, in the form of erythrosine. Guest guest
Hi, You shouldn't ingest more than 150 mcg iodine daily, not 0.150 mcg. 20 mcg is a small amount and unless you're taking alot shouldn't put you over your daily limit. While you don't want to ingest more than 150 mcg/dl, you do need 75-150 mcg daily. Take care, Elaine
