Guest guest
Selenium and T4 conversion: I went 100% wheat free for four months and a measured result was I became low in selenium. Some folks feel SO much better on a wheat/gluten-free diet...I wonder if these people's bodies were using selenium to convert T4 into RT3, and the positive response to this diet was not solely attributable to the absence of wheat, but also to a reduction in RT3, due to lowered selenium. (The wheat-free diet did not help me; but I don't know if I'd yet developed my RT3 problem back then.) I'd bet that responses to selenium are highly individualized. Some will benefit from it, some will see no difference, some people will find it makes them worse instead of better. If I were taking anything containing T4 and also taking selenium, I would monitor my RT3 very closely. If my RT3 went up I'd try stopping the selenium supplements for a while to see if my RT3 went down. > > Can't find th einfo now but I read in a study that selenium is not only > needed for conversion of T4 to T3 but it is also needed in conversion of > T4 to RT3. Guest guest
Something about this doesn't make sense to me. Since the study showed that selenium was needed for BOTH T3 and Rt3 conversion, then if you stop the selenium to reduce RT3, aren't you going to also reduce the conversion of good T3? If the study showed selenium made you convert MORE RT3 than T3, then it would make sense to stop or reduce it. I think selenium is important for many processes in the body, and I would not want to totally eliminate it from my diet unless as Margery said you tested yourself to see if the selenium specifically raised the RT3, and by lowering the selenium intake did not affect your regular T3 conversion badly. > > > > Can't find th einfo now but I read in a study that selenium is not only > > needed for conversion of T4 to T3 but it is also needed in conversion of > > T4 to RT3. Guest guest
The point is if oyiu are on T3 onyl you have VERY low T 4to convert to T3 or RT3 and you are not depending o it converting to T3 as you have enough in what you are taking. Most of us, selenium or no, do not convert well, that is why we are here. -- http://nthadrenalsweb.org/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ http://faqhelp.webs.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/ http://www.thyroid-rt3.com/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypoPets/ http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/

Guest guest
I think the reason many hypos feel better on gluten free is because of Hashi's. Both Hashi's and Celiac's are autoimmune disorders and there are some reports of people who can stop the attack on their thyroid to some extent if they also stop these other autoimmune attacks. Also, many people don't handle gluten well and even if they don't have outright Celiac's, all food intolerences stress the adrenals, and we all know how that affects our thryoids.
