Dee,

Sorry this reply is late.. I am catching up though.. slowly but

surely.. provided my phone doesn't ring again..

I understand your fears about the strong pain medications.. I

did have those, or pretty close, same fears after.. well in high

school taking General Psychology and then reinforced when taking

Psych 101 in my first semester of college... Being as my father

is an alcoholic (non-admitted, therefore classed "dry drunk" by

the psych pros -- but dry for 30 years now)..

Anyway, those classes told me that with him having an

"addictive" personality, and then my older brother doing drugs

(some pretty nasty ones) in the late 60s early 70s, and then

being at Camp LeJeune when they were doing that drug testing

that caused the scandal.. well his drug usage really exacerbated

his paranoid schizophrenia.. SO.. I was leery about taking too

many pain medications myself.... and tried to "tough it out"..

and do without them as much as possible...

Until.. don't remember exactly "who" it was that explained to

me.. (it was a medical professional.. might have been my

orthopedic surgeon that started the dawning of my knowledge)...

When it comes to narcotic/addictive type drugs.. IF you get a

"buzz" from the medication.. then the dose is too high.. The

body will USE what it needs to stop the pain, anything more than

what the body needs is what produces that "buzz".. So if you

develop that buzz with the first dose you take, then you will

KNOW it's too much.. and you need to reduce the dosage, by

cutting the pill in half to start with.. if the half pill is not

enough to completely do the job.. try cutting the other half in

half again (1/4 pill).. need to wait 20 to 30 minutes to give

the first half a chance to work.. if it doesn't.. maybe add 1

tylenol or 1 advil (Tylenol seems to work on my headaches, but

not spasms and things.. Advil works better, for me, for those)..

Adding one of the OTC drugs might just be enough with the half

dose narcotic

If you don't get the "buzz" there's not really a chance of

becoming addicted.. that's not to say that you won't need to

take the stuff for a longer period of time.. until the TN or

whatever is causing the pain goes away..

And you should never ever wait until the pain becomes more than

moderate to take the next dose  -- for instance... if the script

calls for 1 pill every 4 hours.. but at 3.5 hours the pain has

gotten to moderate.. do not wait until the 4 hours is up to take

the next dose (even if your cutting them in half.. in which

case, if you've cut the pill in half and at 2 hours the pain

starts to return... don't wait for 2 hours to take the next

half... the script was for 1 whole pill every 4 hours.. so half

a pill every 2 hours is fine..

What all this blabber amounts to is.. If you wait too long into

the pain, the medication will not be as effective as it would

have if you'd have taken the medication at the onset of the

pain, or shortly thereafter.. And I've never had a doctor tell

me that there is anything wrong with the way I do things.. When

I had that molar extracted back at the end of April or beginning

of May.. dentist prescribed Vicodin.. 1 every 2 to 4 hours "as

needed".. I STILL have two of those left.. maybe more if you

count halvsies.. LOL.. and I DID have to cut those in half --

Had to have the plates & screws removed when they

malfunctioned following the bone graft.. Orthopedic prescribed

Percocette for the pain then... I told him that it wasn't

Percocette pain, it was Tylenol or Advil pain.. but I did have

the script filled on the way home.. X was working afternoon

shift, and there wasn't anybody to get it filled for me IF the

pain got worse in the evening.. surgery was in 1990.. tossed the

full script out in 1992 when we moved back to PA... I never

opened the bottle.. but I had the security of knowing that it

was there if I needed it..

Another novel, of course.. but you might want to try my method

of taking pain medications.. cut those babies in half if you

catch a buzz on a full pill.. The only thing you can't play with

are capsules.. fortunately, most strong pain medications don't

come in capsules.. at least none that I remember every having..

(could be off on the Percocette from way back when) -- I do know

that Percocette or Percodan was prescribed when I originally

broke that ankle.. and my cousin told me that if I wasn't

sleeping, I was babbling.. so maybe it was a capsule, or about

that time I realized that cutting the pill in half was the best

solution for me..

These are just suggestions, from things that I've learned, over

the years, that work for me.. Heck a month's script for Xanax

lasts close a year for me.. <grin>

funny you should say that kate~ for some reason I have a

pkg of prednisone, a bottle of celebrex, a small bottle of

valium, and just got rid of a bottle of pain meds the gave me

for my elbow that I cannot remember the name of that I think

starts with a z...bill engval uses that in a skit with his

bahama mama's and his pain meds for surgery he had just before

going on vacation. anyways, I didn't use it cause it dried me

out. vicodin I think it was! funny the road we have to travel

to retrieve something! am lucky haven't had to use the wrong

word like some of you have mentioned...just have blank spots

that I have to track down...sometimes hours later! so anyways,

I'm loaded with stuff but don't take it because of my own

fears. However, did try the valium to see if it would relax

the spasms at my collar/throat, which was nope, the dope

didn't do it. oh well. suppose if I had a pad time of it again

I would go for one of the other's though~ there is only so

much one can stand! Sure hope it stops soon kate!

Wednesday, but it's Thursday today, and I'm still 'under

Thank you for asking, Sharon. I don't want to get hooked

before the baclofen starts to work. What would YOU do? I

know you'd take prednisone, but what if  you didn't have
