Guest guest
Hi Zoe I suppose the best thing to do is to aquire some copies of your films and send to a couple of resurfacing surgeons to find out what your options are. Remember that there are lots of THR options and that people with the large diameter variety seem to be able to do everything that resurfacing patients can do. Of course we all promote our own surgeons - so I would definitely recommend sending films to - or seeing Mr Treacy. He has a reputation (as does de Smet) of dealing successfully with difficult cases. How do your toddlers cope? Mine was 15 months at the time of my surgery - I was amazed at his gentleness and helpfulness. Very best of luck. Guest guest
Zoe, Read up the stuff on this site of course ... but to short-circuit that stuff get your X-rays of the hip sent to Dr. De Smet in Ghent, Belgium. If ha can't resurface your hip then I'd guess no one can. If you are NHS-bound then Cobbat the Middlesex has a good rep but, you know, it's the NHS with all that means in terms of delay for an as yet non-NICE-approved procedure. Guest guest
Zoe/Chris Hip resurfacing is a NICE-approved procedure - just had it done on Monday, 16th February, at St. Cross Hospital in Rugby, by Mr Krikler using the Cormet device. I shall post more about the op and my experiences next week, I think, but rest assured this is NICE-approved and free of charge on the NHS. Guest guest
My resurfacing was also done on the NHS free of charge---Mr. Skinner at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore-a Birmingham hip. If you say you will accept a cancellation at short notice, you may not have to wait too long. I only waited 7 weeks, even after refusing my first cancellation. Apparently there are more cancellations in winter, however, because of people getting ill, or near Xmas, because of people not wanting to be in for Xmas. Guest guest
Zoe I've heard of disability living allowance from another hip patient a month ago, who told me that his claim got back-dated by a year by the authority that approved it. However, I never claimed. If I can be of help any other way, please let me know. Guest guest
Hi Dan: Was pleased to read your note that resurfacing is an approved procedure in the UK. My GP thinks it isnt, and Wonford hospital in Exeter only do THR. Anymore on that would be appreciated. Guest guest
Phil I hope joins this conversation thread - he's the authority, at least as far as I am concerned, on NHS procedures. In my case all it took was for me to discover resurfacing as an alternative to THR which I denied on 3 occasions. When I found out about resurfacing I emailed all the details to my GP and asked him to arrange another appointment with the Consultant who suggested THR. My GP obliged and I met with the Consultant again and made my case for resurfacing. He probed very thoroughly and quizzed me in detail - the killer came when I said that if resurfacing failed I could then opt for THR. His reply was: " I can't fault that logic. " and he wrote to Mr Krikler who was an ex student of his. Mr Krikler then saw me in December and I benefited 12 days ago from someone's cancellation. That's the long and the short of it. There are hundreds of Orthopaedic Surgeons in the UK performing hip resurfacing operations ( will correct me, but I believe that there are more than 200 by now). Not all of them possibly do it on NHS, but most do. I suggest you try and find an OS nearby who performs this operation and have your GP write to him. I was operated way out of my area (North East London) in Rugby, Warwickshire, in a different NHS Trust. So it's doable. Good luck. Let me know if I can be of further help. Guest guest
Hi Zoe I think you first need a letter from your GP explaining the extent of your disability. I had a blue badge for my car for a while - and needed a doctors letter to apply for it. Good luck Kathy > > > > > Hi all, nice to read some of the things on this website. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My name is Zoe and I fell off a 45ft cliff 1 year ago. Guest guest
Hi Dan I don't know if I like being put on a pedestal. The higher you are off the ground the further you have to fall :-) It's nice to have compliments all the same and I reinforce what you say; I also had my hips done in a different NHS trust area. All so if you are willing to move area or take up cancellations you can reduce NHS waiting times substantially. If you have complications however you possibly should be cautious about doing this. The number of surgeons now doing resurfacing does seem to be on the increase. I would suggest that the as yet unpublished data from the Outcome Centre must be good. I can't imagine that the amount of surgeons doing resurfacing would be as high as it is if the word of mouth between surgeons was not good. I believe that the Outcome Centre Report is to be published this year. Guest guest
Hi Zoe, The Citizen's Advice Bureau are usually very good indeed at helping people both to know what benefits they are entitled to, helping them to apply for them and helping them with an appeal if this needed. I'm an ex-social worker so know this stuff pretty well. As Kathy says, GP letters are usually pretty helpful and as Dan says, they do usually back date your claim to the day you first applied so when it eventually comes through, people tend to get a good big cheque. The benefits system can be a minefield and endlessly frustrating to deal with. It takes patience, perseverance and a good advocate like the CAB. (I have a Canadian accent, although I've lived in England for 34 years. As a Social Worker, I once phoned the Benefits Office on behalf of a client for the umpteenth time. They thought they had put me on hold, but I heard them say,,,,'it's that awful American woman yet again'..!) Having said that, I know that many Benefit employees are underpaid (many need income supplement themselves-hence their recent strike) and have to deal with a myriad of changing benefits and bureaucratic regulations. Good luck. Hang in there, Eleanor Re: new to site, fell off a cliff Hi Zoe I think you first need a letter from your GP explaining the extent of your disability. Guest guest
Hi eleanor/dan/kathy Thanks for the advise. My claim is being reconsidered at the moment. When I rang last they said they were sending out a benefit's doctor to examine me even though my GP had written a long letter explaining how my disability affects my day-to-day life and the help/care I need. The problem is my OS, that I see @once every 6 months, sent a report that I was NOT experiencing 'extreme discomfort'. For anyone else trying to claim DLA this and the distance you can walk without taking a rest is crutial. I'm looking forward to the appointment {they have not confirmed the date as get}. If this fails I am still entitled to an appeal. zoe > > > > > > Hi all, nice to read some of the things on this website. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My name is Zoe and I fell off a 45ft cliff 1 year ago. Guest guest
I am willing to travel anywhere in the UK for hip resurfacing but your GP has to apply to their local NHS trust for permission to do that for you. If there is a surgeon in your area who does the work you want/need then you can only have the work done in another area if you pay for it, and even then you have to have a referral letter from your GP. The only other way of having surgery elsewhere is when you have been on the waiting list for 2 years!! or more (well here in Wales that is the case.) Guest guest
Getting a good surgeon on the NHS seems a bit hit and miss and now I understand the term 'postcode lottery'. I'm lucky in the fact that I will be moving to sheffield in the near future. We've just deceided this weekend after visiting family. I don't know what sheffield has in the way of resurf surgery but think I should get referred now by my GP to another area, before I move, if I'm lucky enough to get permission from our NHS trust, then once I'm with a surgeon, if I move, do I have to change to the nearest/cheapest option for the government, and can I suggest to my GP a good resurf surgeon I've heard about, anywhere in the UK??? When I lived in Greece a few years ago I got a job working for local doctors{ mainly GPs }. They really cared about the best treatment for their patients not the cost, they used to get paid, if a patient was short of actual cash, sometimes in fish/wine/olive oil etc...could you imagon that in the UK????. It will take alot of salmon to fix my hip though!
