Guest guest
Wow, nne, ironing at 9! What a challenging life you had, but it made you an amazing woman. You surely knew how to crack the whip with your own kids. Ours ignore us. My 19 year old daughter can inspire them at times to clean and straighten things up, but for the most part, they are complacent. It's rough, especially when I'm in pain, to try and enforce stuff. Pray for me in that endeavor! love, Kate To: mserslife Sent: Wed, May 25, 2011 8:12:56 PMSubject: RE: pain dr. I'm with you . My kids when they were young all had to make their own beds, on weekends they each had a job to do in the house and each week it was different. The boys mowed lawns and did handyman work for a neighbor and one of them washed dishes along with his sister, at the local VFW on Sat. Our daughter baby sat and washed the dishes at the VFW. Those jobs they picked out on their own. Plus the boys were in the Boy Scouts, at ages 16 and 17 joined the local volunteer ambulance and fire dept. Before they turned 18 each of them made the rank of Eagle Scout which is the highest a Boy Scout can get. All 3 were Students of the Year in high school at their vocational school they attend for 1/2 day as part of their regular schooling. One son in electronics, one son for auto mechanics, and our daughter was for office work. Can't remember the exact wording for hers. Our 7 almost 8 yr old granddaughter surprises Daddy and cleans the house a lot of Fridays and surprises him when he gets home from shopping. Granted she may not do the job of an adult but she does pretty dang good. The only thing he has ever required of her was to keep her room clean. When they visit here, she goes under the kitchen cabinet and looks for the duster and comes out and dusts! Not that its dusty cause I clean ever week but she loves to do it :-)My mother was an alcoholic and I did a lot of the house work. By age 9 In was ironing my fathers shirts. When you are 9 yrs old ironing a size 17 1/2 shirt seemed like ironing a king size bed sheet! LOL I would also do some of the cleaning. Guest guest
I agree with that opinion as well Sharon... Just wish that I could have held my ground when the boys were growing.. A Friend of mine, once slapped her daughters mouth.. because she was mouthing off like she'd seen her friends do with their own mothers, being very disrespectful as well.. Once slapped her daughter had the nerve to look at her mother and tell her that she was going to call CYS on her.. Her mother calmly looked at her and told her to go right ahead and do just that.. because it would not be her leaving the house when they got involved and took her away because her mother slapped her mouth... Mom was right.. and it worked like a charm.. daughter was never disrespectful again.. HUGS |)onna I agree, nne. There are things we must give out kids/grandkids such as food and shelter. We do NOT have to give them TV, sports, computers, MP3 players....etc. lol Those are the things kids need to earn. just my humble opinion:) Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
One time our daughter was upset cause I wouldn't let her go with a couple of girls. She said, thats child abuse! I said really? Yes you can get turned in to CPS did you know that? I said well I will tell you what, the police chief , is right across the street, lets go get the number and see what they have to say! End of discussion!! The girls she wanted to go with were not the kind I wanted her hanging around with. Guest guest
It was especially bad when we lived in California - the schools then were encouraging the kids to report EVERYTHING as abuse. Get grounded? That's abuse. No dessert? Abuse. And big billboards telling kids runaways could get free bus tickets. The Daughter (11 at the time) got grounded for refusing to clean her room (there were BUZZARDS circling....) She took her 6-year-old brother and snuck to the bus station (2 blocks from our house in Riverside, CA) and told them that she and her 6-year-old brother had run away from Texas (her grandma lived there) 5 YEARS EARLIER, could they have that free ticket.... (brother thought they were going to gramma's for the afternoon). Took me 4 hours to persuade the Riverside cops that The Daughter should not spend the next several months in juvie. One of the " arresting officers " walked me to the parking lot and told me nobody would hear nothin' if someone got a garde-A fanny whupping as soon as I got them home... The Daughter tried the " I'm gonna call " thing on me numerous times after. I'd just point out that they had her room all ready and waiting down at juvenile hall. Guest guest
they teach that crap in school...another idea meant to help truely abused kids gone overboard~ my abuse was because I was in her personal space using intimidation to argue over her unloading the dishwasher~ unbelievable. Your daughter sounds like a real tough case~ ugh.To: MSersLife Sent: Fri, May 27, 2011 5:36:17 PMSubject: RE: pain dr./kids cleaning It was especially bad when we lived in California - the schools then were encouraging the kids to report EVERYTHING as abuse. She took her 6-year-old brother and snuck to the bus station (2 blocks from our house in Riverside, CA) and told them that she and her 6-year-old brother had run away from Texas (her grandma lived there) 5 YEARS EARLIER, could they have that free ticket.... Guest guest
Yup, there were truckloads of times that I wished that babies came with instruction manuals.. I came up "the hard way" with a father who truly believed in "Spare the rod, Spoil the child"... the rod and I were very intimate at times! The only thing that would outrage me to the point that I couldn't/wouldn't deal with either of the boys.. was Lying... If I found out that I had been lied to, things could/would get ugly.. technically, at 29, Earl should STILL be grounded! if all the groundings had been enforced... LOL.. Fortunately, Bud wasn't a child to lie.. If I asked him if he'd finished his homework, he said "nope".. when asked if he intended to finish his homework, he'd say "nope".. at that point someone would have to sit down with him and enforce the homework deal.. I made Bill deal with the Math homework.. Bud was ADHD and just couldn't seem to grasp math, and I've come to understand, because math is really a conceptual thing, it is hard for ADHD kids to "get it".. and not being ADHD myself, I just couldn't get my head around.. how come you can't tell me what 4 minus 3 is??.. Bill was able to work with him where I couldn't.. Of course Bill used Candy in solving math problems.. the visual was actually the thing that worked.. I think.. not the fact that he got to eat the candy when they were finished.. BUT.. when Bud and his step-brother came out of the bedroom and showed me the shiny new "paint jobs" on the hot wheels cars... and then tried to tell me that they hadn't used my Sharpies on them as paint.. when I could SEE it all over their hands (Sharpie on Hot Wheels, doesn't dry very well, and indelible ink all over his hands wasn't something I was overjoyed with sending my step-son home with!).. And did you ever notice that the little curse your mother put on you (and I'm sure they've all used it).. "When you grow up I hope you have kids just like you!".. always but always seems to happen? HUGS |)onna One time our daughter was upset cause I wouldn't let her go with a couple of girls. Guest guest
I remember those days.. Earl got me six weeks of visits with the school's social worker.. because he told his teacher that he put his books away before told to, for lunch, because we had gone racing that weekend and didn't feed him!.. (Teacher called to tell me that she was "required" by law, because he said that.. when anybody who looked at the boy KNEW he wasn't being starved! -- he wore "huskies"... My brother's oldest got him looked at thoroughly as well.. oldest told the teacher that all the mosquito bites on his arms & legs were cigarette burns! (they were scratched open mosquito bites, before the West Nile thing 25 years ago.. and a creek ran through our back yard).. Kids do do and say the darndest things!... where is Art Linkletter when you need him? Guest guest
Good for you, nne. So many parents let their kids run with anyone. I saw a kid yesterday that I knew when he was a small boy. His mother told us a few years ago that she believed in free expression for kids and she wasn't going to tell her kids what to do. When she was still married to their father (she has three kids) the kids were wonderful, kind, caring, smart kids. Anyway, the boy I saw yesterday is expressing himself with partially shaved head and the rest in a stiff mohawk, six piercings across his cheek.... but the worst part is that he is clearly using drugs. He was so spaced out and didn't recognize my grandkids. They used to be the closest of friends. His pals that were with him looked pretty much like him and all were drug addled. This kid is 16. I have heard his younger siblings are in pretty much the same shape. It saddens me so much. I hope and pray he straightens up before he has brain damage from the drugs he is using. Sad!! Guest guest
That would be the end of the kid in my house!! NO WAY! If one the boys came home like that he wouldn't get out of the house except for school till his hair got back to normal. Our son from Green Bay came down with our granddaughter and her friend. Justyne (granddaughter) eats pretty much everything. Her girlfriend not! We had tacos and Abriana didn't want them. Our son had brought some Froot Loops for the kids so she wanted them. She took about 3 spoonsful and said I'm done. We both looked at here and said DONE???? Yes she said. I said to her you know what, when our kids were young first off, you ate what was put in front of you. I didn't make them eat liver cause I wouldn't even eat it. I said if you didn't want it, you went to your room and got nothing else to eat till morning. One time our daughter was mad at me because of not letting her go with the girlfriends I spoke about yesterday. She kept saying, I'm not hungry. I said ok, we will see in 3hrs if you are. She sat at the table for 3hrs, no goofing around with her bros. and then went straight to bed with no treats etc. Last time that ever happened. Well after telling Abriana this she decided she would finish her cereal! If kids want to express themselves let them do it when they are out on their own. You live in my house you do as I say. i supposed that sounds like boot camp, but I will tell you this much, none of my kids ever talked back, got into trouble of any sort and have all grown up to be great parents. One of the "arresting officers" walked me to the parking lot and told me nobody would hear nothin' if someone got a garde-A fanny whupping as soon as I got them home... The Daughter tried the "I'm gonna call" thing on me numerous times after. I'd just point out that they had her room all ready and waiting down at juvenile hall. Guest guest
Sharon, Then maybe I shouldn't tell you that Bud wanted a "reverse Mohawk" at one point in time.. What he did end up getting was a Velcro head when he decided halfway through a "buzz cut" that he wanted to keep his nearly shoulder length hair.. but just on top.. He was a clown.. and would flop his head from side to side.. giving that Victor/ look a whirl!.. unfortunately, when the buzzed part started to grown in.. he found that the long stuff stuck to the buzzed part, just like Velcro.. He was addled most of the time.. just not from drugs... HUGS |)onna Good for you, nne. Sad!!
