Guest guest
The scary things in at the local tv station's website, and even msnbc and cnn, I see scary mistakes, sentance fragments, the wrong usage of a word (like hear instead of here), etc. And these people are paid t write. Tina I am amazed at what happens in the media--radio and television,so I thought of some examples to make me (and maybe you) feel more--well--functional. Here are some of the latest that I have noticed:1) TV advertisement for Celebrex: " And for those taking Aspirin and The Elderly. . . . " 2) Advertisement for San Francisco restaurant, " Those of you who want a really exciting dining experience in a " reshterAWNT, " -- Restaurant has the " au " in the middle syllable, not the last. . . 3) Advertisement for a local community college: " Before I started at " blank " college, I was constantly " shtruggling. " Apparently the individual needs speech therapy. . . 4) On a recent medical program on TV: " We have the diagnosis and it is " porfereerria! " The word is actually " porphyria, " and is pronounced " porfiria. " . . . And these people get paid to confuse the language; I think thatis wonderful if I can recall the right word, but I usually do pronounceit correctly--when it finally comes to me---no reimbursement at all! Cheers to you all,n
Guest guest
I know! It's the same in Sweden. Something that annoys (and sometimes amuses) me is the wrongful separation of words in Swedish, probably a mistake specific to languages where you build new nouns by combining two or more other nouns into one (and it really needs to be one word, or the whole meaning will be changed). A common example you see all the time in stores etc is a wrongful separation of the word for chicken liver (which in Swedish would be kycklinglever, where the "kyckling" part means "chicken" and "lever" means "liver"). The problem with separating it, and writing "kyckling lever", is that you are then no longer saying "chicken liver", instead you are saying "chicken alive". Not exactly the same thing... And a really funny example I saw just the other day was a very official sign, probably ordered from a professional sign maker and all, saying "Rök fritt" (meaning "smoke freely") instead of the intended writing: "rökfritt" (meaning "no smoking")... I make that mistake in English, I know, that happens because I know that in general English combines nouns should be written as two separate words (as opposed to in Swedish), so I tend to do that even in cases where they should have actually been written as one word like in Swedish. Overcompensating (which is a word I believe should be written as one...Ha! avoided it there...). But then, English is my second language, and I don't claim a status as a professional writer in English. And, yes, people who get payed to write, should be able to write, that's my opinion too.love/Reb>> The scary things in at the local tv station's website, and even msnbc and> cnn, I see scary mistakes, sentance fragments, the wrong usage of a word> (like hear instead of here), etc. And these people are paid t write.> > Tina> > On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 7:51 PM, marion j rojas> marionjrojas2002@...wrote:> > >> >> > I am amazed at what happens in the media--radio and television,> > so I thought of some examples to make me (and maybe you) feel> > more--well--functional. Guest guest
I have two online friends that live in Norway. I swear, they speak better English than about half of the people that I see that live around here. Usually they just get mixed up on the spelling. And there are some word usages, or rather, mashups, that people just don't seem to get that aren't right - like irregardless, when the word they actually want is regardless. I worked as a legal secretary for 14 years. I was working in a worker's comp firm, and my boss kept using a word that wasn't actually a word - couldn't even be found in unabridged dictionaries, or in an online dictionary. We went round and round about it, until finally he did a search I think on Lexis, and came up with x amount of briefs that used that word. I told him just because it was used didn't make it an actual word. Basically, his argument was if other lawyers used it, he could too. He ended up not using the word. It's been so long ago (around 1998) that of course, I can't remember the word. I usually didn't have to correct his grammer, but if I did he usually listened. Tina I know! It's the same in Sweden. Guest guest
(((((hugs))))))In truth, when most people make spelling goofs or grammar errors, I don't worry about it - its when people are in a position where they should know better - for example, the businessman who pretends that he's better than everyone else, the politician, the lawyers, etc., that it bothers me. I even had an English teacher in high school that constantly said " pacific " instead of " specific " and " pariograph " instead of paragraph - she became a running joke, because, well, if you are getting paid to teach grammar and such, you need to be able to pronounce the words that you are using on a daily basis. People on forums and groups lists, well, you never know what kind of upbringing they had, and a lot of people tend to use a sort of short hand for those things. In her letter writing, for example, my grandmother had her own sort of " shorthand " , (and she actually WROTE letters, never typed them even though she had a typewriter. One time when my grandfather was based in California in WWII, he specifically apologized for typing his letter, but the thoughts were so jumbled in his head, he felt he could get them out clearer if he typed them.) Shame on the person that made fun of you. I'm glad you told her to bite you. It sounds like you are talking about stream of consciousness maybe? Saying it how you think it, right? I do that alot (rofl, see above). It drives my husband rather mad, but as I tell him, I was like that when he married me. Tina i can not say alot about this, i do it..there was a lady in my cancer group, that made of of my story's, in a bad way, and i will not lie, i was going to stop posting .it was the story about the small boy that gave .5 to my cancer thing, that was all he had , and he gave it , i just want to let ppl know , will she did not know it was me and she was making fun of the way i sp things, and the way i wright things, will the other ppl in group told her about it , and what all i have, she did not say she was sorry, i did post after that , and after i told her to bite me, not very lady like but, i said it. i was told i wright the way , some very good authors do there is a word for it , but i for get. it is like i am telling you the story to your face. and i like that, yes i was hurt, and i did cry a lot, so i would not say a thing about how someone wright , use the words they use. see i do it too...i wish you peace

Guest guest
Truthfully, Debbi, I don't think I can post any other way than stream of consciousness, its just the way my mind works. If I have a post that doesn't stray, I had work really hard to keep it that way! I think its another thing that adds in to my distractibility, truthfully. It's horrible at home sometimes - if I want to say something, and hubby says wait until commercial, I can't remember it, or if I start to say something and someone says something totally different, I'm gone. The thought's gone, and everything with it, and I'm in the current conversation, whether I wanted to be or not. Tina that is it, that is what ppl in the group called it , and they said it is a good thing, so i keep posting, and if someone does not like the way i do it , they can delete it, i try my best, i like ppl to see that even with cancer and ms , a bad heart , we live, and we have fun, will most of of the time...and debbi land is a good place to live.... Guest guest
I agree with what Tina said here. It's about what position you are in.And like I said, my English is far from perfect, but I think it'll have to do ;-) Language is about communication. That's why it's important that those whocommuicate on a professional basis make sure that they are communicating what they mean to communicate, and nothing else. But that's also why it's OK for you and me to write the ways we do, as long as we are communicating.love/Reb> > >> >> > i can not say alot about this, i do it..there was a lady in my cancer> > group, that made of of my story's, in a bad way, and i will not lie, i was> > going to stop posting .it was the story about the small boy that gave .5 to> > my cancer thing, that was all he had , and he gave it , i just want to let> > ppl know , will she did not know it was me and she was making fun of the way> > i sp things, and the way i wright things, will the other ppl in group told> > her about it , and what all i have, she did not say she was sorry, i did> > post after that , and after i told her to bite me, not very lady like but, i> > said it. i was told i wright the way , some very good authors do there is a> > word for it , but i for get. it is like i am telling you the story to your> > face. and i like that, yes i was hurt, and i did cry a lot, so i would not> > say a thing about how someone wright , use the words they use. see i do it> > too...i wish you peace> >>

Guest guest
Tina... you and I have something in common. I was an administrative secretary for the State of Arizona at CPS. There was an assistant attorney general attached to our office and I often prepared legal documents for him as well as our caseworkers. We have one caseworker in particular who clearly had his own language because many of his words were his own. lol hugsSharonThis email is a natural hand made product. And, yes, people who get payed to write, should be able to write, that's my opinion too. love/Reb >> The scary things in at the local tv station's website, and even msnbc and> cnn, I see scary mistakes, sentance fragments, the wrong usage of a word> (like hear instead of here), etc. And these people are paid t write. > > Tina> > On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 7:51 PM, marion j rojas> marionjrojas2002@...wrote:> > >> >> > I am amazed at what happens in the media--radio and television, > > so I thought of some examples to make me (and maybe you) feel> > more--well--functional. Guest guest
Funny, Akiba! My granddaughter uses her made up word "rack-a-ly" for messed up, uncombed hair. The whole family is now using that word and have for about 8 years. lol SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. To: MSersLife Sent: Mon, June 6, 2011 10:41:37 AMSubject: Re: Mistakes that people who do not seem to have MS make all the time My dad had a made-up word that he used all of the time, it was "stintz", it could mean anything he wanted it to...like, "I'm missing my stintz", or "where'd I leave my stintz?", for some reason mom and I ALWAYS knew what it was and usually found it for him. ~*~Hugs~*~ ~*~Akiba~*~ Pragmatic Visionary http://www.affiliates-natural-salt-lamps.com/pages/156.php -- Re: Mistakes that people who do not seem to have MS make all the time I have two online friends that live in Norway. I swear, they speak better English than about half of the people that I see that live around here. Usually they just get mixed up on the spelling. And there are some word usages, or rather, mashups, that people just don't seem to get that aren't right - like irregardless, when the word they actually want is regardless.I worked as a legal secretary for 14 years. I usually didn't have to correct his grammer, but if I did he usually listened.Tina I know! It's the same in Sweden. But then, English is my second language, and I don't claim a status as a professional writer in English. And, yes, people who get payed to write, should be able to write, that's my opinion too. love /Reb >> The scary things in at the local tv station's website, and even msnbc and> cnn, I see scary mistakes, sentance fragments, the wrong usage of a word> (like hear instead of here), etc. And these people are paid t write.> > Tina> > On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 7:51 PM, marion j rojas> marionjrojas2002@...wrote: > > >> >> > I am amazed at what happens in the media--radio and television,> > so I thought of some examples to make me (and maybe you) feel> > more--well--functional. Guest guest
Unfortunately it was my group. She was the rudest person I have ever met. She threatened to turn me into Yahoo! She was mad cause I " sided " with one of the ladies on something. Can't even remember what it was but the lady I backed was totally correct. Oh well, she is gone. I hate to remove anyone but sometimes you have no choice. I give them more than a fair chance but some people are impossible. How are the fires?
