From: MsSquarepants mercury toxic and I think that is partly why my current kombu helps my thyroid and other issues because inIf you get kombu, make sure it is kombu and not kelp. Kombu is dark brown when held up to light and kelp is green. They tend to use the terms interchangeably when marketing kelp. Kelp is good but kombu is much, much better. I think once I ordered from Maine Coast Sea Vegetables but they didn't have the thick true kombu and the other big shipment I do not recall. Wish I did since that is the good kombu but I can't seem to find it anymore. Now I just buy locally.
