Louisiana proposal: firefighters exempt from any medical or emergency oversight

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Every day across Louisiana, firefighters are busy battling

blazes and, in some cases, saving lives.

Soon, firefighters may take on a new role if lawmakers in Baton Rouge approve a

new proposed bill.

" It would be firefighters practicing medicine without oversight … no oversight

by the gubernatorial-approved EMS commission, " said Dr. Juletty Saussy.

Saussy heads up all emergency medical services in Orleans Parish. She said

proposed House Bill 1030, written by state Rep. St. Germain from the Baton

Rouge area, makes all firefighters exempt from any medical or emergency

oversight when they're at a scene.

What that means, she said, is that firefighters could give medical care and

there wouldn't be anyone looking over their shoulder.

" I don't think a single person in Louisiana wants an unregulated person coming

in their home and responding to a medical emergency, " Saussy said. " I think

people expect us to oversee the quality of care they receive. "

The Louisiana State Firemen's Association said Saussy is using scare tactics.

Nick Felton, who represents the association in New Orleans, said that what the

doctor is saying is " boogie man stuff, not fact. "

Felton went on to say that " the intent of the legislation is that we don't need

the EMS board in on our discipline. A lot of the firefighters think they treat

us like criminals, like we're always wrong. "

Felton said the bill has the utmost of every major Firemen's Association in the

state. Saussy hopes lawmakers vote it down.

" What are they thinking? They can't practice medicine in the state of Louisiana

without answering to someone, " Saussy said.Copyright 2010 by WDSU.com. All

I am betting that the " precipitating event " was the last IAFC conference some

fire chief attended, where they fed him the current propaganda push about how

much they can increase their budget by taking over EMS, but how expensive EMS

training is. Or else he heard about all the troubles that the fireboys are

having with their Medical Director down in Floridia, not letting them practise

if they haven't met current certification requirements. The nerve of that MD,

eh?

Rob et al,

I don't know the answer to why but I know that in the vast majority of

States in any politicol fight where it's EMS versus fire the ultimate

winner is fairly well peedictiable.

Not that i agree with that it is a plain straight no BS fact that if

you want things done in the Capitol be it the State Capitol or in

Jefferson's odd shaped City you need a lobby.

The cards are dealt that way plain and simple.

BTW, for the record I have a real heartburn over these kinds of

proposals.

Of course, have you forgot firefighters walk on water? Won't be long before they

don't even need to respond to fires after 10:00pm. Can't let the poor guys go

without their rest so they can work their second and third jobs. OMG!

Ridicule them fireobby a Ya want it's gotten EMS where it is today.

EMS may well be the red headed bastard but when one really looks in

the proverbial mirror one sees why. If you're truly honest in looking

that is.
