Guest guest
This was started by a group that is unhappy because the EMS Board fined a few people for treating patients without a state EMT license. The board even suspended the fine and granted an amnesty. A few vocal people feel that they do not need to be regulated by anyone. If this bill passes, non firefighter EMT's would become second class citizens in their own profession. One set of rules for firefighters another set for everyone else. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Every day across Louisiana, firefighters are busy battling blazes and, in some cases, saving lives. Soon, firefighters may take on a new role if lawmakers in Baton Rouge approve a new proposed bill. " It would be firefighters practicing medicine without oversight … no oversight by the gubernatorial-approved EMS commission, " said Dr. Juletty Saussy. Saussy heads up all emergency medical services in Orleans Parish. She said proposed House Bill 1030, written by state Rep. St. Germain from the Baton Rouge area, makes all firefighters exempt from any medical or emergency oversight when they're at a scene. What that means, she said, is that firefighters could give medical care and there wouldn't be anyone looking over their shoulder. " I don't think a single person in Louisiana wants an unregulated person coming in their home and responding to a medical emergency, " Saussy said. " I think people expect us to oversee the quality of care they receive. " The Louisiana State Firemen's Association said Saussy is using scare tactics. Nick Felton, who represents the association in New Orleans, said that what the doctor is saying is " boogie man stuff, not fact. " Felton went on to say that " the intent of the legislation is that we don't need the EMS board in on our discipline. A lot of the firefighters think they treat us like criminals, like we're always wrong. " Felton said the bill has the utmost of every major Firemen's Association in the state. Saussy hopes lawmakers vote it down. " What are they thinking? They can't practice medicine in the state of Louisiana without answering to someone, " Saussy said.Copyright 2010 by WDSU.com

Guest guest
After teaching at a paramedic program at UL and working for Acadian for a couple of years, I can certainly say that politics in Louisiana is the #1 spectator sport. True or not, the Louisiana State EMS Office has always been accused of playing politics in all facets. -MH ________________________________ From: texasems-l [texasems-l ] On Behalf Of Louis N. Guest guest
 How would the two sets of rules not differ from nowadays? AZ has privates that do 911 but the FF medic is the only authority even with less critical thinking. Milwaukee FF medics overrule the private providers even if the private transport and are first on the scene. For a long time the private could not initiate ALS care until th FD showed up regardless of the call. Dallas firemedics refuse transport but are not held to the same abandonment legalities that everyone else is in the state. Cities prohibit anyone other than FD from doing transports or using lights and sirens. If there was fairness everywhere, there would be no egos from FD to private provider and all of EMS could be friendly but until it happens........... ________________________________ To: texasems-l Sent: Sat, March 20, 2010 6:59:47 PM Subject: Louisiana firefighters  This was started by a group that is unhappy because the EMS Board fined a few people for treating patients without a state EMT license. Guest guest
This has nothing to do with the practice of EMS but the regulation of the profession. A firefigher EMT will not have to worry about the state revoking, suspending or initating any type of discipline to their certification for ANY reason if this bill passes. The Board will not even be able to investigate a complaint if it receives one. If someone would file a complaint that this medic is a child molester - nothing will happen - no investigation would be held. A non firefighter EMT will be treated like any other health care professional and will be accountable to a board of his/her peers if a complaint is filed. If someone files a complaint that this medic is a child molester - an investigation would be conducted. Two classes of EMS professional regulation. One for firefighters and one for everyone else. If this is a good idea why not prohibit the State Medical Board from investigating a medical director who works for a fire department? It would be the same thing. > > >  How would the two sets of rules not differ from nowadays? AZ has privates that do 911 but the FF medic is the only authority even with less critical thinking.
