Guest guest
I have done 2 rounds at 25 mg DMSA. I am going to do a 3rd round starting Monday. I seem fine at this amount. In fact, I feel really good while I am chelating. The day after I am pretty tired, but by the 2nd day after, I feel okay again. Should I try a few rounds at increased DMSA before I try adding ALA, or should I try adding ALA at very small amounts? I am about 3 1/2 months post amalgam removal. Thanks! -Olif

If you're using the 25 mg capsules of DMSA (no dividing!), I'd keep it there for simplicity's sake, and add in some ALA. I started my ALA at 25 mg (it's easy to cut a 50 mg tablet of ALA in half) and did fine with that-- some brain fog and low energy after round. (<---note: I was not treating my low thyroid problems then). Remember to switch to every 3 hours, instead of every 4. Another option, if you feel after round side effects are too great, is to do the last several doses of the round DMSA-only. I didn't find that necessary. According to the descriptions in AI, I'd say I started out as moderately poisoned. The more severely poisoned = the more side effects. Good luck, in Illinois
Guest guest
Olif, I'm a lot like you with DMSA. In the second round I found I felt much better on it. At the same time, I knew I react terribly to ALA. I knew my blood mercury levels had been way down for 18 months before starting frequent dosing, while the most serious remaining symptoms were closely linked to low levels of all tested hormones (pointing to a brain mercury problem). With this in mind, I gradually increased DMSA to 50 mg before introducing ALA, and when ALA was added, extended each round with an extra day or two of DMSA only. ALA seems to be very hard on me, but I think it's because it releases a lot more mercury back through my system. I intend to gradually increase ALA to 25 mg, and then gradually reduce DMSA to 25 mg as I'm able to handle ALA better. I would love to do ALA alone, but when I trialed a round that way I became very sick and unable to function by the second day. Even at 12.5 mg ALA with 50 mg DMSA I deal with a persistent headache, and I go into uncharacteristic emotional extremes in the 4th day and have to stop the ALA. Although it's not in the protocol, I've chosen to chelate giving my body 'breaks' for a few weeks after 3-4 months of weekly rounds. Chelation is an added stress on my digestion, liver & kidney and immune function; and I prefer to take time out to let things 'normalize' and allow for other aspects of detoxification, assess improvements, and then return to chelation. Although my digestion was worsening until I took a break, I realized within two weeks or so without rounds that it's actually improved very much and liver congestion is consistently way down. My fitness level has improved significantly, but earlier improvements in poor hearing in one ear regressed backward a bit. It seems each situation is different and you really have to use some intuition and self observation as to how to go about this in the way that's best for you. I'd hoped to be chelating at 50 mg & 50 mg, and chelating continuously until I was done, but so far that would be too hard to do. I'm far too impatient to stick to extremely low doses indefinitely. I need to be able to see concrete results and want to improve my health while age is still a little bit on my side. This is my 3rd round on 25 mg DMSA. I will talk to my doctor this week about increasing to see what she thinks (I am really lucky to have a doc familiar with Andy's protocol and who also believes I am Hg toxic!). Thanks for the caution about ALA. I need to realize that just because DMSA is working so well for me, that doesn't mean I won't have problems with ALA! I will be very cautious and start with tiny amounts. I will talk with the MD about this, too, since she might think it is best that I stay on DMSA only for a few more weeks. I am almost 4 months post amalgam removal. " I would love to do ALA alone... " What is the reason for this- to keep costs down? It is easier on the body to use DMSA with the ALA, right? I was looking at figure 15 in AI last night, and it does look like I might want to start using ALA soon to avoid a large backslide. Thanks, Olif

I was never the sort for taking any type of OTC meds, Rx's, or supplements other than a multivitamin, and will be much more comfortable when I can stop taking unnatural substances altogether. But that may be just wishful thinking! Also, I know that the day I can take only ALA will be the day I'm REALLY doing a lot better, since I've known from the start that this is the critical supplement for releasing mercury. Before starting this program, it was kind of horrifying to be trialing ALA every 4 months or so and having such awful results that I'd be 'throwing in the towel' within a couple weeks.
