Guest guest
Hi , I've gone through the same thing. My unsupplemented Vitamin D (hopefully you got the right test, the 25-hydroxy-D) was 19ng/ml. I started taking 4,000iu of an oil based supplement daily (Now Brand) and retested after three months. My level was then just 34ng/ml, far from the 50 ng/ml that is recommended. I started taking 6,000iu daily of another oil based D3 gel (it was a little better value) and finally my level is over 50ng. The dosage depends on lots of things, your body mass, skin color, where you live, habits (staying indoors, sunscreen, etc), clothing, age, etc. I don't know what your co-pay is for that prescription vitamin D3, but you can take a top quality oil based vitamin D3 gel for about $2 or $3 a month. It may be cheaper for you that way. My wife only needs 4,000iu daily. Some people only need 2,000iu, others from what I understand need more than 10,000iu (usually VERY heavy people though) Here is what I take... http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1 & pid=7763 & at=0 And this is what started me in taking vitamin D3. http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/search/label/vitamin%20D and this... http://wildhorse.insinc.com/directms13oct2005/ Neil > > > > Yes as Vitamin D has alot to do with thyroid conversionm the T3 levels > > do rop lower in Winter months when ther eis less sunshine. >
Guest guest
Neil, thanks for the great links. Found the presentation (last link) fascinating. Just confirms what I'd read on Mercola awhile back: that sunshine, contrary to what we've been taught by the media, is essential for our health. Gee, another conspiracy by sunscreen marketers? Guest guest
This is what Dr. Blanchard explained to me yesterday. He said it's essential to take 5,000 ius in the wintertime, esp. for thyroid patients. Re: Low vit D Neil, thanks for the great links. Found the presentation (last link) fascinating. Guest guest
Hi Barb, Glad you enjoyed it. The presentation starts out a little slow, but by half way I found it incredibly interesting. Dr. Vieth is one of the world's authorities on vitamin D from what I understand. The reference ranges he mentions are slightly different, he speaks about nmol/l while the American is ng/ml, but the message is the same. Guest guest
Heard back from new doc on my low vit D and he's putting me on 50,000IU every day for two weeks and then every other day or something like that. He's shipping me the pills, hopefully with directions since I can't seem to remember anything today. > > Hi Barb, > > Glad you enjoyed it. Guest guest
Hi , Wow, that is a kicking dose of vitamin D. Just so you know though, you can get too much of vitamin D, I believe you want your levels between 50-60ng/ml. Too little and you can get cancers, colds and flu, etc. Too much and you risk excessive blood calcium, you can actually deposit calcium in your arteries and aorta. You wouldn't want to turn into a giant block of limestone...ha! So I would not take such huge doses for long....just my thought.
