Guest guest
Hi, I recently joined this forum and purchased the Amalgan Illness book. Wow! I can't remember getting a book so jam packed with information. It's fantastic. I notice that the doses he talks about using of DMSA and ALA are quite a bit higher than what is usually recommended on this website. For example, he talks about using a " typical dose " of 200- 400 mg DMSA every 4 hours (page 89). He talks about using a combination of 50-100 mg of DMSA with 50-200 mg of ALA. Why are the doses recommended on this forum so much lower? Does the forum reflect more up-to-date information about how mercury toxic people tolerate these chelators? I have just started my second round of DMSA (using 25 mg every 4 hours for 3 1/2 days on and 3 1/2 days off). I had essentially no adverse symptoms during or after the first round and so far no adverse reactions on the second round. Is this a surprising result for someone with mercury toxicity? A little background on myself. I am 55 (almost) and had loads of amalgam fillings from an early age; aging and broken fillings that were at first replaced with more amalgan and later with composite: and the last of the amalgam fillings removed spring 2007. I haven't done any proper chelation until now. I have taken considerable amounts of chorella over the past 3 years and especially since the final amalgams were removed. I have also periodically taken cilantro and quite a bit of MSM. I have many of the listed symptoms of mercury poisoning. I recently sent in a DDI Hair Elements Test but have not received the results. My DO did a Red Blood Cell elements which showed mercury and lead in the high end of the grean range. At my insistence (I didn't know better), I also did a IV DMPS/EDTA challenge with a 6 hour urine test. This showed lead and mercury in the high end of the yellow (elevated) range. After this test, I experience a number of side effects (you're probably not surprised!). If I don't have any difficult reactions to this round of DMSA only chelation, I am planning to do the next round with DMSA and ALA combined every 3 hours. That is, unless I get advice to the contrary from this forum. I have been planning to do 25 mg DMSA and 25 mg ALA. But I'm wondering if I should start with a higher dose as described in Cutler's book or a lower dose as discussed on this forum. I appreciate the resources on this forum. I am so hoping that chelation helps to restore my health and energy. I'm just so tired of feeling this way. Ann

Does the > forum reflect more up-to-date information about how mercury toxic > people tolerate these chelators? > How mercury toxic people tolerate the chelators depends to a large extent on how toxic they are and how fragile their condition is. The more toxic more frail tolerate _less_ chelator to start so it is very important for them to start low and gradually work up only as tolerated. The strong ones who can tolerate more chelator will soon find that out. As far as I remember Andy has always, always said to stop if there are problems and lower the dose to that which has minimal side effects. People often miss that part of what he has said. If you look through the links section you will find Andy's dosage and timing of chelators based on weight. http://home.earthlink.net/~moriam/Andy_dose_sched.html Many start even lower than that (I started at about 1/10 mg per lb). > I have just started my second round of DMSA (using 25 mg every 4 > hours for 3 1/2 days on and 3 1/2 days off). I'm not surprised after I read your history. For one thing, spring 2007 is about now so you have not entered into the 3 months after amalgam removal when the body starts to 'dump' mercury from the organs. What out! The cilantro and DMPS may have driven mercury deep into tissues meaning that you may find considerable symptoms when you start using ALA. A > little background on myself. Then the body starts to dump mercury from tissues. When that happens, that can bring on side effects, and be a difficult time for some. You have gone beyond a year, so yes, that does change my initial concern. I still think that you will find side effects will progress as the DMSA starts to move mercury and would be advised to do several rounds with DMSA alone. It doesn't change my concern about ALA (that the side effects from the ALA may be strong because cilantro and DMPS have driven mercury deep). I still think it would be best to start ALA at low doses and do several rounds to see how it goes (as TK suggests).
