Hi Bruce,

I dont know why but for some reason your words seem to touch my heart especially now. Maybe because when I should be out celebrating , I was in bed with my Hospice nurse here at 7:50am in a panic. I thought I was dying and I didn't want to die alone or have my family see me go. She did say my breath sounds are very diminished and wrote that I was slipping quickly. I slept most of the day, till my daughter brought me over a cake. I cant complain, I've had a good life and people like you have made it even richer, God bless you.....

I realize too well that you may be close and may be slipping away but

you're sure an incredible woman. Whatever time you have try to use in

the way you most want. Glad your daughter brought you the cake. Want

some ice cream or anything else? If so have someone bring it. Talk to

everyone you can and want to. I hope your pain isn't too bad right now.

I am trying to relate to the panic. Who you're with when you drift into

a morphine sleep or at death should be your choice. Don't fear others

seeing or how it will affect them. Two of the moments in life that give

me the most strength and comfort in what comes after is seeing the peace

in my mother and my ex father-in-law as I watched their last moments and

their change into a more peaceful existence. Your belief and faith in

the moment has to provide strength to those around you. I don't know

when it will come for you, for selfish reasons hope not too soon if the

pain isn't bad, but somehow I know that your last post here will be as

full of beauty as all the others. Glad you're sharing your birthday with

us. Now, I need some cake....oh well, you can have my share too. You

know you can have all you want.

Bruce,I just hate when that happens to one of us. I don't know how I would handle it... not well.I wonder what has happened to our . I miss her. Last tuesday the local doctor sent off the referral, we had a public holiday wednesday. Today (wednesday 7 days later) I get a letter from the hospital... I get my hopes up that I have an appointment.. NO.. The letter reads that they have received the referral and I've been placed on a waiting list to have my referral categorized.  Once they categorise the referral I will either be sent an appointment or advised on why it was categorised otherwise. This is the leading cardio-thoracic hospital, not overly impressed. Geeta

My CT wasn't being taken because of my PF. We basically know how it is

and so no purpose there. It was taken because of my swollen lymph nodes

starting in June 07. I haven't see the final results as I see the doctor

Monday but the nurse called yesterday to say they have not grown so

probably don't need to be monitored anymore. I see my oncologist in a

week or so.

In addition to the diseases and medical issues I do have, I seem to have

more than my share of " possibles " . Fortunately they all seem to turn out

ok at least for now. That has included pre-cancerous colon tumor,

swollen lymph nodes, elevated parathyroid (test shows no cancer there),

elevated homocystein (stroke marker but no other issues there),

connective tissue disease indicators (current believe is no active

connective tissue disease), cholesteotoma removed but no return of it,

gout diagnosed at ER but no one believes really have it or did have it,

at one time Parkinson's fear but was determined caused by parkinson's

med. A couple more checks to be made but expecting them to come up blank

too-for Sarcoid and Myeloma. So, I've had a long list of things they

would be concerned about but ultimately through additional testing

relieve that concern. That explains why I currently have 16 doctors. Now

I do still have 18 or 19 conditions or so but they're all being treated

(well except for my UIP) and all is fine and under control.

I think I just have enough real conditions and the Pulmonary Fibrosis

(UIP) that it pushes lots of blood tests and other things (like lymph

nodes) out of normal range. Unfortunately, that involves checking to see

if there is an additional problem. Fortunately, most of the time nothing

serious additional is found. I imagine we'll stop monitoring the lymph

nodes now except when we do CT's for the PF once a year or every other

year and will have no lymph node biopsy. As to Connective Tissue we'll

just keep monitoring with labs but until anything decides to pop up its

ugly head and manifest itself we'll not worry or do anything. Unless

something changes they have concluded no muscle biopsy and hopefully the

second opinion neurologist will agree with my primary neurologist and no

EMG (have had EEG).

I think the doctors get more panicked than I do. One runs a test and

sees something and says you must go see this other doctor and have them

check for this. I go, but not in a panic because I know its just another

in the list. Now, while my doctors have been vigilant toward getting

things checked, I'm fortunate that they don't jump the gun on treatment

or biopsy or other things. I'm also fortunate that as with my

rheumatologist that they are quick to recommend second opinions to

confirm theirs. University of Chicago believed connective tissue was

likely based on a long list of factors. Current rheumatologist saw that

as reasonable but examined and tested and said couldn't diagnose a

connective tissue. He sent me to another who came to same conclusion as

him or at least preliminarily. Both of those actually would have

preferred to have found a " treatable connective tissue disease " but just

couldn't say they had.

So, I continue with a long list of " may have but turns out no evidence I

do " , combined with a long list of real conditions and a chart a mile

thick but, in reality, I feel good and I'm doing well. If you'd see the

stack of medical records you'd know I had to be in horrible shape, but

if you'd see me out and about you'd know I'm doing fine.

I have to laugh when I supply records to new doctors as last 16 months

alone includes 26 sets of labs, 14 CT's, 6 sets of x-rays, a sleep study

(had 4 in total), 3 Biopsy Reports (Just one biopsy), and a total of 20

doctors during that time some of whom I don't now see. Not during that

period but in total I also have 5 endoscopies and 5 colonoscopies plus a

few upper gi's and related and the worst of all, the motility study.

Sounds sort of overwhelming but it isn't. I sort of bunch it up when I

can and do not let any of it interfere with plans or travel or anything

I want to do. For instance August 2007 I had 19 appts and August 2008

had 13 but from April 21-May 7 none as I traveled and May 14-June 17

none as I traveled (well, except ER on the road). Living is still my

priority far above seeing doctors.

Everytime I see Tamra's name I just think I have to meet her someday. My

one phone conversation with her was so great and everything I've heard.

Glad to hear you're going for more of the sildenafil. As an aside,

Cialis is also now being looked into for many of the same things

Sildenafil is being used or tested. Since they are very similar meds it

makes sense.

At what Medicare pays them, maybe cars, but not Lexus.

The babies are so happy. was over last night as I fixed

hamburgers (her favorite for me to fix) and she saw them and got so

excited and played with them while I cooked. Also the ones from movies I

didn't see she could fill me in on all their information. They are all

sitting on my chest in my bedroom. So now the headboard of the bed, the

dresser, and the chest are all covered. She was their first visitor and

made them very happy, especially that she knew who they all were and

everything.

Looks like I'll end this year with only something like 40-45 doctors

appointments or tests and 30 counselor appointments and no physical

therapy. So 70-75 total appointments. Thats down nearly 50% as last year

was around 140 (92 doctors, 53 counselor) so improving. Goal for 2009 is

30 doctors appointments pls about same on counselor. Minimum doctors

appointments with nothing but the required visits, no problems, is 25.

Oh Bruce, I could NOT do all that. I have several issues that I have dealt with but the only Dr I intend to see is my Pulmonary. For EVERYTHING... I have an Appointment in Jan. and don't intend to go but every 6 months unless she has something new to say. I have only been one time this year. She has called in antibiotics for me and that is all I need. It is so very freeing for me to only go once or twice a year. All that happens is the PFT's look a bit worse, walk is a little harder. I look fine and healthy, so it's always keep doing what your doing.I am very happy with that.   Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida,  IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet, when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."  PeggyLooks like I'll end this year with only something like 40-45 doctorsappointments or tests and 30 counselor appointments and no physicaltherapy. Neither do most of the others know.

Well, here goes my macho man image, but I have beanie babies lining my dresser and other stuffed animals across the headboard of my bed. Peggy sent me recently another box of beanies, mostly baby beanies. The now are all on the top of my chest in my bedroom. They are all so cute.

When they arrived by UPS, they couldn't wait to get to the computer to tell her about their trip here. Scruffy (he's a cute little dog) had appointed himself spokesperson so he typed the following to Peggy.

This is Scruffy. I'm the spokesman for us, although I don't know why they call me that cause i don't got no spokes, not even anything with wheels. But anyway, I get to do the typing. All the others are watching and running their mouths telling me what to type. He is letting us use the puter and sit on the sofa and watch tv till bedtime.....we told him we get to stay up real late and he fell for it. Then we'll go to the bedroom with the other bears and aminals....oh they are saying i spelled that wrong. I don't care.

It was a fun trip but we were a little close and a couple needed toothbrushes and paste if you know what i mean. we rode in trucks and down conver....convey....some sort of belts I forget....the kind you move stuff on....on conveyor. Not sure why they call them belts either as no body wears them around their waists.

We got scared here cause this afternoon early the driver tried to liver us....no, deliver us. Thats a stupid word too....means taking your liver out. Well, he tried to bring us to Bruce and he wasn't here and then he was going to take us to the department....no, apartment office and no one was there and a couple were crying but i told them he still wanted us and then the guy brought us back and he was here and he was so cited. And then he opened the box and we all jumped out and he screamed and we laughed but then he hugged and talked to us and we like it here.

Gigi said Scruffy was very bossy but the others didn't mind, they just let it go in one ear and out the other.

Last night, , my ex-wife, was over for hamburgers and she played with all of them while I cooked dinner. It's relaxing to me to walk into my bedroom and see the gentleness of all the little people surrounding me.

Peggy

There are many times I've thought of moving to a beach in another

country and far away from all doctors and just riding it out. However, a

lot of mine has been them trying to figure things out. Now, the minimum

for next year is just based on the minimum visits for each specialist

and for each condition. Its not likely any of my other conditions will

cause serious problems in my lifetime, due to the PF/UIP. However,

without treatment or meds they would and my quality of life would be

greatly diminished. I have many different things, none serious today,

but all which untreated and unmonitored would be causing serious

problems. Fortunately, they are all within a 10-15 minute drive of me.

Just weird I guess the way things are. I take nothing other than oxygen

for PF. Yet, I do take 10 medications, for 10 different things

(prescribed by 8 different doctors). Then the connective tissue disease

issue has taken lots of appointments. And, then all the things I get

referred to my oncologist on (even though so far no diagnosis of any

form of cancer) and monitoring of kidneys and ears (previous

cholesteotoma and surgeries) and eyes and such.

But, whats important is I feel good and all is fine. And, except for the

month of August when its unfit to do anything here anyway I don't let

doctors interfere with living. Life and trips and those things always

take priority on my calendar (unless sick or something).

Bruce: I LOVE IT!!! Beanies ARE cute. Thanks for sharing, and putting a smile on my face. BarbaraBruce Moreland wrote: Barbara Neither do most of the others know. Geeta

Actually most of the doctors I have are happy with knowledge and

questions. My rheumatologist does disagree with my choice on Prednisone

but not from a rheumatology standpoint and he does say thats up to my

pulmonologist and me. I think its one of those situations of me being

better informed as to the benefit or lack of benefits of Prednisone on

UIP than he is. I'm going to suggest (oh I know he won't but we'll laugh

about it) to my pulmonologist that he sit him down for some training.

lol. On the other hand the rheumatologist is pleased that I go to others

for followup when he advises. Well, I thought it was very professional

of him to want me to go to another rheumatologist to get a second

opinion on his findings and to suggest the ones he considered best. I

must say he's done a very thorough job of finding nothing to this point.
