I have run a low temp for over 30 years since I was dig. with thyroid. I

have blood tests every 3 months and they all say I am ok with the amount of

medication I am on. Except, I have a very enlarged thyroid now, and a large

goiter. I go Wed to have the Thyroid up take test. I had an ultra sound done

already. It showed Goiter with Nodules. I think it read Nodule with many small

nodules flowing in spider web like fashion. they could not determine if it was

cold or not. She asked if I could come back for a needle biopsy and I said

yes but they never called. I go the 24th to see a endocrinologist. I sure hope

someone has some answers somewhere. Thanks for replying what you say is very

interesting and I guess I never thought about if the med's were right.

Norma,

Many, many people never question their doctor regarding thyroid problems. Go to

the following web site and do some reading if you want to learn some more about

how the thyroid works and what other options are out there for you.

www.stopthethyroidmadness.com

I too ran a low temp for years and never questioned it, until about 2.5 yrs ago.

Learned differently and have made changes that are for the better.

Good luck. Do not be suprised if the doctors want to remove your thyroid

because of the nodules and the goiter. Those can be treated, but most doctors

just want to remove the thyroid. If you would like other options, go read at

the web site I listed above.

Norma,

Be sure and get your vitamin D checked as well. I think my daughter may

have had low responsiveness to thyroid, but her panels were always

normal. We have her on cytomel, which is T3, and a very low dose and that

has helped her but we might have gotten her in trouble by messing with that

before we got her vitamin D deficiency solved. Sometimes it is hard to

figure out which end is the cart and which end is the horse!

One of the things that can damage the thyroid is the accumulation of

oxalate, which can happen with goiter

Eur J Clin Chem Clin Biochem. 1993 Sep;31(9):559-65.Links

Oxalate in the human thyroid gland.

Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik, Abteilung IV,

Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen.

Ninety-seven fixed surgical thyroid specimens and 63 unfixed and 40 fixed

thyroid specimens from autopsies were examined for their oxalate content.

Proteases were used to process the tissue, and the oxalate was determined

with an enzymatic assay. The fixed samples were grouped into seven

diagnostic categories (diffuse colloid goitre; partially diffuse, partially

nodular colloid goitre; nodular colloid goitre; goitre with multifocal

functional autonomy; non-functioning adenoma; unifocal functional autonomy;

Graves' disease). The oxalate concentrations of the samples were mainly

dependent on age and gender, which were distributed unequally among the

seven diagnostic groups. In thyroid tissue from cases of Graves' disease,

however, the concentration of oxalate was remarkably low and statistically

different from those of four of the six other groups.

,

You are so right in getting the vit D checked. On my thyroid boards a lot of

the folks with hypoT are finding that thier vit D is low. I should have

suggested that myself. In fact when I go back to my doc in a couple of months I

am going to have her run the Vit B's and Vit D tests to check on those. I do

not get out side much and I have a feeling my vit D is very low.
