5 months before my tx, I lost my voice. I thought it was just a bit of laryngitus. I figured it would go away like a cold would, but I didn't eat much and spend the day in bed and then when I got up to go- I ended up on the floor. My Mom called the ambulance and sent me to the ER and after waiting hours, I was admitted and after that I don't remember a lot. I guess I was pretty sick and ended up spending more than 3 weeks there. The hallucinations were a real trip, I didn't know I had that vivid and creative an imagination. The UC took over my gut, and I didn't want to eat and couldn't get out of bed, couldn't talk so I had a hard time telling the docs what was going on. I was glad I could remember some sign to spell out what I wanted with my fingers, but, alas, no one knew it to interpret. Turning to the side so my sheets could be changed was almost impossible. That was when the doctor came in to yell at me to eat. I didn't think she would know the sign for "up yours" so I don't think I used it. HE had settled in. Eventually the staff inserted a nasal feeding tube and my mother abd sisters brought in some custard and fresh raspberries to eat, and my daughter snuck in some frozen cokes for me to drink. and I slowly got better. I gained a real understanding of how anorexic people think and use food and eating to control people and situations. I had to go to an extended care facility for a month after leaving the hospitalto get me strength back so I could go home.

The lesson I can teach is to not wait. Go get some blood tests and make an appt. to see your gastroenterologist and liver team. It is not smart to sit at home feeling bad and wondering what is wrong. The "not knowing" is worse than any diagnosis. Chances are, you have an infection and need treatment- yesterday. Since it is the weekend, go to the ER first thing Sat. morning, when you should not have to wait too long and find out what is wrong. So--- why are you still reading this e-mail? GET UP AND GO SEE YOUR DOCS.
