My daughter went to this school for half of third grade.  I am not at all surprised by this story.  Thank God someone was able to get proof and charges were filed.

DAVIE (CBSMiami) – A teacher at an alternative education school in Davie has been arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse.

Davie police announced on Wednesday that they had charged 49-year old Baier.

Baier is an employee of the Alternative Education Foundation (AEF) school at 4650 SW 61st Avenue.

According to the arrest affidavit, the student, who has autism, was acting disruptive during a school field trip. After returning to the school, Baier is accused taking away the child’s chair because he was fidgety. He reportedly told the child he could get his chair back if he could stand for five minutes and not “annoy him”.

The affidavit states that the child began to crouch down, that’s when Baier allegedly pulled the child’s hair up to get him to a standing position. A short time later, police say Baier again grabbed the child by the hair, this time throwing him to the ground and pinning him there for several seconds.

Authorities say the entire incident was caught on video. Officials reviewed it after the child complained to his mother that his head was sore.

“How can you send your child to a school that’s designed for special needs children, and have one of their employees treat your child like this?” said Captain Dale Engle of Davie Police.

The school is geared toward students who need an education in an alternative setting.

No school official would talk to CBS4 News.

“AEF operates a variety of schools, camps, tutoring services, and parent support groups for children and families whose needs are not being met by traditional public schools or mainstream services,” according to the foundation’s website.

Parents who have concerns that their child may also suffered abuse at the school can contact Detective Wong at .

DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida teacher is behind bars, accused of terrorizing a 12-year-old boy who has autism.

Police said Baier was allegedly caught on tape abusing the child on July 27 at AEF schools, according to a police report. " Very disturbing. I mean when you see the size of this man, he's 6 foot, 270 pounds and a 12-year-old child, it is very disturbing what you see in the video, " said Dale Engle of the Davie Police Department.

According to that report, the abusive incident started after a field trip where the child had been argumentative and disrespectful, calling Baier names and stomping on his foot. The report says the child was sent to Mr. Baier's classroom for punishment after the field trip.

The report goes on to say when the child misbehaved Baier grabbed his hair with his right hand and clinched his left fist, threatening to do more. A short time later, the report says the two were discussing the child's behavior and Baier allegedly threatened the child, who leaned back defensively and cried out, 'No.'

" About 15 minutes later, the child, once again is fidgeting in his chair, he's told to sit still and when he doesn't, Mr. Baier goes over, the poor child cowards in his chair and Mr. Baier grabs him once again by the head of the hair and throws him to the floor, " said Engle, " And then immediately instructs him to get back up in the chair. A very, very disturbing video. "

The report says: " Despite his verbal outburst, at no time is the child observed being physical or violent toward Baier. "

Baier, 49, is facing two counts of child abuse. The school's attorney released a statement: " We deny any and all allegations as presented against Mr. Baier. "

Davie Police has received more calls from concerned parents after this story first aired. Police are also saying they've seen a letter sent home from the school asking parents to grant the school permission to wash their child's mouth out with soap or hot sauce if that child says something sexually explicit or an expletive.

Baier appeared in court Thursday, and posted $2,000 bond. He is anticipated to get out of jail this afternoon.

If you have any information on this incident, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.

Phyllis,

To answer your question ... Why is this still going on?

One of the reasons this is still going on, is because the administrators at the

school look the other way, to protect their own jobs and the school's

reputation. The other teachers, if they know about it, are afraid of

retaliation from the other teacher or the school administration if they report

the abuses. It is a vicious circle.

I am all for video recording in classrooms - kind of like the " dash-cam " on a

police car. It protects both the students and the teachers. It protects the

students from abuse and the teachers from false accusations. I don't think the

video should be open to the public or used to promote the school or anything,

but it might help control what goes on in the classroom.

It is sad that this is how low some people can sink. If a teacher becomes this

frustrated or this upset, he/she should take time away from the job, or have

another teacher take over the classroom while he/she regains control of their

own emotions. If that isn't possible they should ask someone else to take the

child into another room to deal with the problem. There is no excuse for abuse.

Please keep the word out in this. The teachers need to take a stand and speak up

for the kids. They need to recall why they became teachers. They HAVE to know

what goes on and how they can continue to work there and look the other way is

disgusting. I am praying that the video is not released to the public. Think

about if it was your child in that video, would you want to have to sit and

watch that over and over again on the news. Think of the child, hasn't he been

through enough. Keep the spreading the word and don't let this go away!!!!
