I seem to remember that the bigger ones will eat the little ones. Try a little

They love cat food as they are meat eaters and yes they will eat eachother.

Dare I ask where you got the frogspawn from as it is illegal to take it from

the wild.

The frogspawn is from the pond in our garden. I thought I was doing

them a favour protecting them from the fish!

Not if you boil them like last year

My parents had a " leaking " pond which the frogs came back to spawn in after

it rained. They had to keep a hose topping it up all the while the tadpoles

were growing.

They fed them on meat of all kinds and the froglets were such an amazing

sight when they left the pond in all different directions.

I agree, my faher in law breeds toads and frogs, and has 4-5 ponds in his

garden full of spawn. They do eat each other to a certain extent, its just

the 'survival of the fitest' thing, otherwise they would not all get enough

to eat, then they would all die!

The biggest threat is birds eating them. You can buy food for them from

aquatic shops. Mine all died last year, so this year my FIL came and took my

frog spawn, sod it if it is illegal, at least some might actually live!

I did raise tadpoles once and fed them totally on fish food. They

were fine until they started to turn into frogs, at which stage they

did start eating each other. It was then that I released them into a

pond to fend for themselves. Guess this isn't very helpful really,

although at the time a neighbour did tell me that they were eating

each other not because they were hungry, but because the tank wasn't

big enough for them all.

When at infants school many moons ago we used to put a couple of

pieces of mince into the water on a thread, and change it every day

(important or it stinks to high heaven and makes the water go bad),

once the tadpoles had back legs. Fiddly though! And assumes you're

eating mince every day ;-)

I'm not sure it *is* illegal to take it from the wild (unless it is

an endangered species of frog) - though I seem to remember that there

is a recommendation you don't move spawn from area to area (that

wouldn't include bringing it in from a garden pond) because of the

spread of diseases - something called Red Leg springs to mind. Your

local Wildlife Trust would be able to tell you if it is a problem

where you are.

I remember watching with fascination tadpoles grow into frogs as a

child at school, and it seemed easy then. I took a small clump of

frogspawn inside for *my* children to watch, and " released " more than

three quarters of the tadpoles back into the pond when they had

hatched. (There is no sign of any now). The six surviving tadpoles I

have inside now have some cat food to nibble on, and I'll remember to

change the water. Thanks for all your input!
