Hello fellow Parents,

As the school year end nears parents of ESE students need to be aware that any

end of year field trip for an entire class (like a middle school graduation

class) MUST include ESE students.

If any ESE students are excluded from these activities it is discrimination and

contrary to District, State and Federal anti discrimination laws.

State Rules, from page 1:

http://www.fldoe.org/ese/pdf/1b-stats.pdf

1000.05 Discrimination against students andemployees in the Florida K-20 public

educationsystem prohibited; equality of access required.—

(1) This section may be cited as the " Florida

Educational Equity Act. " (2)(a) Discrimination on the basis of race,

ethnicity, national origin, gender, disability, or marital status against a

student or an employee in the

state system of public K-20 education is prohibited.

No person in this state shall, on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin,

gender, disability, or marital status, be excluded from participation in, be

denied

the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under

any public K-20 education program or activity, or in any employment conditions

or practices, conducted by a public educational institution that receives or

benefits from federal or state financial assistance.

Your District Policy is similar if not identical.

My son was excluded from all the field trips because his teacher said his

behavior was not good enough to go. He is in the Emotional / Behavioral Cluster

in 5th grade. I was so very sad for him that she denied him and the rest of the

kids from going. One of the trips was to Sea World, and granted it would have

been a long day for him and he wouldn't have been able to handle it without

acting out. But I felt separate accommodations should have been made so he and

the other 5ht graders in the E/B cluster could have gone on a separate bus, or

separate trip just for them.

I agree. My 5th grader just left today on her trip and my 3rd grader, who has autism, you can guarantee will be on her 5th grade trip. I plan to make this VERY clear from the beginning of school that they need to prepare whatever needs to be prepared, including allowing me to go on the trip, so that she will be included. Just because he has emotional outburst, doesn’t mean he has to be discriminated against and that is what this is. If he has an IEP, he should have had accommodations made for him period. I also think it’s the school, teachers and principals that can make or break a situation like this. I am sad for you and your son. This discrimination on field trips issue was brought to the Broward ESE

Department's attention in 2010. There was no question at that time that all

students were to be included in all class wide field trips. I was told that all

ESE specialists were advised in training and writing that all ESE classes were

to be included in all class wide field trips.

This happened to my son's class in middle school. It was because the teachers

and ESE specialists were lazy and just didn't want to deal with a field trip.

Sharyn, I suggest you call and / or e-mail the principal of the school, the area

ESE Director, the District ESE Director, your School Board member and both at

large School Board members. At the area and District level they are well aware

of the serious nature of this discrimination.

This is a serious offense that breaks District policy, State rules and Federal

civil rights laws.

Tonya is correct in that this is where a principal, ESE director and teacher can

set the tone for how accommodating a school is going to be. Some are ignorant of

the rules in spite of being told and some I guess just lazy and think they can

get away with discriminating against our kids.

This is a civil rights violation and does not have to be tolerated.

To Anyone that have problem with the field trip issue....please if you could let

me know which schools you are talking about....you can let me know privately

also. Nathalie.adams@...

Jane...I also go to Coral Park....this is one of the few schools that have good

support for our children. Those schools needs to be modeled. Unfortunately....

There is still a lot of schools out there....where this is not the case.

The only way we can do something....is to know about those schools.

Hi Nathalie, regarding your comment about Coral Park, I agree 100%, but this is only since the current autism coach, the wonderful Caryl Panzarella. Noah went to kindergarten there, pre-Caryl, and we couldn't get out of the school fast enough (switched to Parkside) after numerous screaming-across-the-table IEPs. A school is only as good as the current staff. To: "sList " <sList > Sent: Thursday, May 3, 2012 6:17 AM Subject: Re: Re: End of school year field trips
