Hi, I am new to this site, as I was approved yesterday.

I am having a terrible time with my weight, since becoming a diabetic.

I have gained alot of weight. I do exercise, but the I believe that

the meds that I am on are adding weight on big time.

I am on Amaryl, Avandia, Accupril, Lopid ( Gemfribrosil) & Zetia.

I know that both Amaryl & Avandia can cause some weight gain, but I

have gained some 50 pounds since becoming a diabetic about 4 yrs ago.

My doctors don't do anything, just say stop eating so much. But then

there the hypoglemic problems also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, your doctors have done something. They have put you on medications

and given you advice about reducing your food intake. (I know, you don't

want to hear this) ;-)

Next time you feel hypoglycemic, take a reading and see if you really are.

If it's not your meal time, eat a snack with 15 grams of carbs, wait 15

minutes and see if you feel better.

If you are NOT hypoglycemic, DON'T EAT. If your blood sugars have been

running high, it will take a while for your body to get used to them coming

down.

Get on a schedule and have your meals and snacks spaced out evenly

throughout the day.

Ask your doctor about diabetes education (this will include working with a

dietician and getting a meal plan, which will probably have you eating less

as well).

When picking food, be careful about 'low carb' versions of food which in

many cases is higher in fat and calories. While medications can (and do)

cause weight gain, in *most* cases, weight is caused by consuming more

calories than you are expending.

Bottom line, there isn't a pill your doctor can give you to make you lose

weight. You have to take responsibility and action on your own.
