Guest guest
" How do you know your serotonin is low? " I had a few neurotransmitters tested from urine by NeuroScience (through my ND). Their website is www.neurorelief.com. I think some of their tests can be ordered at www.directlabs.com for more money, if it isn't possible to get a doctor to run them. Ross has a great book called The Mood Cure, which uses amino acid therapy to treat some neurotransmitters going by symptoms, if cost is an issue. -Olif
Guest guest
My ND added > 5-HTP and theanine in the evening (my serotonin is low) to help me calm in > the p.m., instead of just exciting me in the a.m. Tyrosine also supports the > thyroid, since the thyroid hormones T4 and T3 contain tyrosine. Careful with theanine (although it's pretty safe with my experience) but it might lower serotonin. " Theanine-induced reduction of brain serotonin concentration in rats. * Yokogoshi H, * Mochizuki M, * Saitoh K. Laboratory of Nutritional Biochemistry, School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, University of Shizuoka, Japan. yokogosi@... Following the administration of theanine, the brain tryptophan content significantly increased or tended to increase, but the contents of serotonin and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5HIAA) decreased. The use of inhibitors of serotonin metabolism enable us to speculate that theanine reduced serotonin synthesis and also increased serotonin degradation in the brain. Guest guest
I was never tested for low serotonin, but read Teitelbaum's book on CFS & fibro and realized I was sleeping very poorly (interrupted through the night with painful muscles, trouble falling asleep, etc.). Following suggestions there (which I think are found in Andy's book, too), I was sleeping through the night and doing significantly better as far as muscular pain through the day immediately after starting to take 5-HTP and a Valerian/Passionflower/Theanine/etc. herbal blend before going to bed. Sometimes I think it's a whole lot easier to just try the supplement than to worry about going out for more tests and waiting through that process.
