Guest guest
The story goes that a town in a faraway land was being terrorised by a dragon. The townsfolk placated it with sheep but sometimes it would demand a human sacrifice in the form of a young girl. Eventually it was the turn of the local princess to be thrown to the dragon. Along came our hero, slew the dragon and rescued the princess. The locals were so impressed that they all converted to Christianity, in thanks for his deeds. The obviously mythical story we know was invented around 14c but may have its beginnings much further back than that. seems to have been a real Christian martyr who died for his faith at the hands of the Romans in the middle east sometime in early AD. The characters of the dragon and the princess are each said to represent Satan and Christianity. It seems to have been a story that caught the imagination the world over, as even in India, St is venerated in the form of a green man (different to the British green man of legend) and there are shrines to him. The story may well have reached there from the soldiers of the Crusades. India was continually invaded over the centuries and many travellers have passed through, bringing their culture with them. HTH! Lesley ------------------ From: Caroline Well someone had to say it... can anyone remember the story of St and his dragon? Guest guest
Lesley, thanks for that; now please can someone explain what the flag of St actually looks like? Partly want to know anyway, and partly because am making a quilt which features two US flags and I want to replace one of them with a union jack - have worked out the St 's flag (white with red cross) - St s (blue with white diagonal cross) - and then St s .... white and red in some form....not in DD's encyclopaedia [ :-(( typical DK ] - also need to know the order in which it's laid down IYSWIM....have drawn it out but am none the wiser.... Also has anyone got templates for the Tumblers quilt pattern? Have drawn them out but just wondered....(new curtain project in head, won't see light of day for quite some time..) Caro wishing she could find time to do some sewing...(blood from all four countries flows in veins so proud to have UJ) The story goes that a town in a faraway land was being terrorised by a dragon

Guest guest
The welsh flag is not on the Union Flag, which combines the flags of St , St and St . For more info you can look at http://fotw.digibel.be/flags/gb.html There is a very complicated diagram of the correct construction on the Union Flag at http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/union-jack/union-jack.html For information on the Welsh flag (Y Ddraig Goch - the Red Dragon) go to http://fotw.digibel.be/flags/gb-wales.html HTH Cerys Who obviously has nothing better to do with her time than look up web sites relating to flags -----Original Message----- From: Caroline Heyworth Lesley, thanks for that; now please can someone explain what the flag of St actually looks like? As dd2 has gone to sleep, for the first time in living memory while dd1 is at school, I've actually got an hour and a half of child free time before we have to go and collect dd1 again, and I'm sure I ought to be doing something more productive with the time (like sweeping the kitchen floor and clearing up the hair ball the cat deposited on the back door mat this morning).
