Guest guest
SCD Electrolyte Drink: 1 quart (4 cups) boiling water ¼ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. baking soda 2 Tbls. honey Mix together. After it has cooled, refrigerate. Keeps for 24 hours then you must make a new batch. I make this every morning and drink some hot before refrigerating. Can be mixed with SCD legal juice to mask the taste (tastes kinda weird but it works!). I just drink it straight. Well there is some debate about it - Elaine was against it, and Marilyn follows Elaine on that point. However, according to someone else on the Healing Crow list who lives in Samoa, if you can get tropical green coconuts - not the stuff they sell in the States as the same, but actual fresh ones that are still fresh when you consume them, they are supposed to be great for IBD conditions. But like always - if you can get those fresh tropical kind - it is try at your own risk. > Does anyone have a definitive answer about the coconut water? So the answer is not definitive - Elaine called them illegal, but according to this person who is kind of an expert on them, there were facts that Elaine may not have been aware of. You could join Healing Crow to read her recent post on this. > I know it contains sugars - not sure what kinds of sugars. Any > advice would be greatly appreciated! Guest guest
Eileen I never use honey in my electrolyte drinks. I often wait about 30 minutes after drinking the electrolyte drink then drink diluted fruit juice to get the sugar boost. Guest guest
Here is a link to a commercial but SCD-legal electrolyte concentrate: http://www.crampnomore.com/ I get the green-labeled bottles, not the ELyte sport because of the salt levels. I use a lot of ELyte, but find one bottle lasts me about 8 to 12 months. I dilulte it more than recommended, but still, one bottle lasts quite a while. I also make my own version of the SCD electrolyte drink, to add more of the few minerals I need. But ELyte is very convenient, especially when you go through as much as I do. Kim M. Guest guest
Thank you Doug for the advice. I’ve bookmarked the link in case I need something like that. The powder sounds preferable. I think I read somewhere that apple juice and maybe citrus juice is absorbed through the stomach and that juice from fruits like watermelon are also absorbed through the stomach. I have to research it more. And my husband read somewhere that the stomach can only absorb 2 ounces of liquid per hour. So, it appears that I need to sip electrolyte and/or juice throughout the day. And eat juicy fruits. Carol CD 21 yrs SCD 4 ½ yrs No meds except B12 shots > > Are there any other solutions to my problem? ***Caution -- illegal advice to follow*** In my pre-SCD endurance athlete days I had great success with Endurolyte capsules. I've started taking them again even though I'm not training anywhere near as heavily as I used to but I've been getting muscle cramps pretty easily lately. The cramps are probably due to a number of factors: - low salt diet (although I am generous when I add salt) - reduced water and electrolyte absorption - I just don't drink as much water as I should (hangs head in shame) - carbs hold water in the body so a low carb diet (yeah, I know...) will result in reduced water content in the tissues of the body You can read about Endurolytes here: http://www.hammernutrition.com/za/HNT?PAGE=PRODUCT & PROD.ID=4037#info4 Scroll down and look under " nutritional information " for ingredient details. I've only used the capsules but it's available in powered form too. As far as I can tell there are perhaps 2 illegals -- maltodextrin and maybe the capsule shell themselves (made from plant cellulose). I'm not worried about the cellulose and -- here's the illegal part -- I'm not worried about the maltodextrin since there's only a very small amount. Repeat warning: maltodextrin is illegal. Use it at your own peril. That said I'll probably get the powder next time since it contains neither the cellulose nor maltodextrin. -- Cheers, DF in MA UC June '07 SCD Nov '

Guest guest
Thank you so much Kim. I’ll check out the E-Lyte concentrate. Your medical problems make mine sound like a walk in the park. Onward and upward! Carol Carol I'm always on the edge of dehydration as well, and have been since I was an infant. I, too, get all the usual chronic symptoms of dehydration, and have needed IV fluids a time or two or three.... I can't tell you how many times I've been tested for various conditions that might cause this problem, only to find out -- so far -- nothing specific. Apparently it is just the way my metabolism and body works. I don't have an IBD, but have developed functional upper GI disorders, along with developing a progressive (but slow) neurological and neuromuscular deterioration. In the past 3 years I've also had to deal with low electrolytes, which is apparently linked to my neuromuscular issues. Anyway, I haven't found any other solution than to drink water (filtered, room-temperature) constantly, and to boost my electrolytes as needed, which turns out to be at least once a day and more often when I'm working outside or doing something more physically active. I wake up with a dehydration headache every day, and sometimes in the middle of the night, so I tend to drink a glass or two during the night, and reach for a glass of water as soon as I am out of bed. I make sure I get plenty of salt throughout the day as well. I realized not long after starting SCD that I wasn't getting enough salt in my diet since I stopped using convenience (canned) foods. It took a few weeks to get used to salting my food regularly, but that did help with my dehydration and low electrolyte symptoms. I do make my own version of the SCD electrolyte drink, since my stomach is extremely intolerant of certain ingredients in water. But I also use E-Lyte which is a concentrate available through mail-order. I can send you a link to the source I use if you like. I go through so much electrolyte drink every week that it helps to have a concentrate solution. I can't answer your questions on coconut water, as I have only tried it once and my stomach rejected it. My stomach rejects a lot of helpful things, I'm afraid [sigh]. The important thing is to avoid illegals in the commercial coconut water; it is best to make your own. I do drink diluted apple juice often, which is a good source of potassium and is something my body requires. I also have hypoglycemia issues, and find that either diluted apple juice or diluted orange juice helps with that plus my low electrolyte issues. I tend to have a glass of diluted fruit juice about 30 minutes after guzzling down my electrolyte drink. I can't use honey in my SCD electrolyte drink, because of my cranky stomach.... Wish I had a sure-fire cure to dehydration. I just do what I can and warn my doctors before I have to prep for a surgery or procedure that I'll need IV fluids as soon as I get checked in to pre-op.
