O.T. and S.T. Hours

To the parents of children attending middle school:

How many hours of OT and speech does your child receive per week? My non-verbal son, low functioning son is on a monthly consult basis with the O.T. I think this is ridiculous, since he doesn't eat with utensils, can barely hold a crayon, etc. The O.T. told me the rationale for this is the teacher works on those types of skills in the classroom. Your thoughts?

You need an advocate and/or attorney. That is ridiculous. Where is he at school? The teacher does not work on these skills – she reinforces what an OT tell her to – for example if the OT says he shuld be using a tripod grasp, then as he is working she will be required to re-adjust his pencil or crayon. But your son I am sure is eligible for 5 times a week OT and SLP – You need an advocate. We are in Volusia county. I'm wondering if there is a difference in services from county to county? I agree, my son is not getting what he needs.

Anyone requiring an educational advocate, please call me at the office. I will be happy to explain our program to you. In many cases there is little to no fees.

No – he is protected with an autism diagnosis under IDEA – which is Federal – Under IDEA the school is required to do whatever is necessary for him to derive a “meaningful educational benefit†in the “least restrictive environment.â€Â  Your school will not give you anything – you are going to have to get an advocate or attorney to educate them on their responsibility to your son and then you will get what you need. They are going to tell you they need a complete SLP and OT evaluation to even think of providing related services. They have 90 days to do this.    I would also ask for a complete Psychological evaluation and physical therapy as well.  If he cannot feed himself or hold a crayon, then he needs a complete evaluation and work up.  Personally, any time I ask the school for an evaluation of any kind, even updates or interims, I do them privately as well because their reports are always going to be more rosy that reality.  Just make sure your private people look at it from an educational perspective, because that’s all the school is responsible for. I am sorry you are in Volusia – as I do not know of an advocate there – maybe someone on ’s list does. I wish you much success.  Tonya QuarequioLicensed Loan Originator/Owner, NMLS  88836Celebrity Mortgage Corporation320 SE 11th StreetFort Lauderdale, Florida 33316Telephone: Facsimile: Cellular: Email: tonya.celebrity@...Website: www.celebritymtg.netNMLS:  206978 The highest compliment I can be paid is the trust and confidence you demonstrate when introducing me to family, friends and associates who might also benefit from the services I provide. The needs of the child drive the services. Not the county you live in.
