The way your mom said is great.  Any kind of fruit juice (strained) and it gets icy.  It's kind of like fruit ice.sorbet.  It's better than ice cream to me.  There are exact directions if you search foodnetwork.

BTW, I did keep on about an ice cream maker and got one for Christmas lol.  That's a long way off--is your birthday closer ;-)

Yes, you can... you stir it and scrape what's frozen off the sides with a

spatula.
