Guest guest
Kathy, can you tell us about your experience with Armour. When you started, what if anything else you were on when you started, what dose you started on, what increases you've done and what dose you're on now. I started taking it, but got a lot of bad advice, went major hyper and went back to my levo with a little Armour. I'd love to hear your experience and how you're doing now as well as other labs. Hi , I had alot of your symptoms when my TSH was on the high normal end. Even had the cramps in my legs and feet. My doctor switched me to Armour thyroid which is a natural thyroid hormone from pig thyroid. It has made all the difference for me , the day I started it ,my fuzzy mind was gone also my leg cramping, I feel so much better. My Tsh is down to .99 now. There is another nice yahoo group that I like , alot of the members are on armour, the group is called Thyroid. Good luck Kathy How low will we go? Check out Yahoo! Guest guest
I am a new person to this group! I hope I can get some insite. I had thyroid cancer 4 years ago, cancer free and have taken synthroid. I was fine until 11 weeks ago when I had my third baby. I lost a lot of blood and had a hemoglobin of 6 and now a Ferritin of 35. I was unable to take my synthroid afterwards and noone could figure it out. Finally I ended up with excrutiating abdominal pain, undiagnosed for 2 weeks..I was unable to even sit up. They did an unneeded surgery, etc. No answers. Finally my internist gave me a shot of steroids and I started to get better. I think my Iron was so low it wouldn't help my synthroid and then my adrenals blew because I was so sick. Currently I am on Synthroid becasue the Armour was wigging me out with the cortef they gave me. I have become extra sensitive to all meds and vitamins. My RT3 is 33 and my Vit D, Ferritin are low. I just got normalized on Free T3 and T4, but I am still really bad. I have shaking, muscle weakness, pain, highs and lows. I take cortef 2.5 once a day and sometimes twice a day. I am pursuing diagnostic tests soon, but i don't think my doctors really know what they are doing. Any insite????
Guest guest
Hi I am still learning but here's what I think might be going on. We despeartely need good ferritin levels in order to properly utilize thyroid hormone into the cells. If you don't have good levels ( like when your level was 35) T3 couldn't eneter your cells and so instead is was then just pooling in your blood. and causing all those horrible symptoms especially shaking. I think first things first is to get a full iron panel done (inc ferritin) and then you could post the results here and people can advise you on how much iron to take if needed. Also could you give us the ranges for your RT3 result and did you have a FT3 done at the same. If so you could post that result as well with ranges and we can help you work out the ratio. Guest guest
Josie is right (as usual) low ferritin is a BIG issue. Here's link to more info: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/ Also, have you read Nick's website? It answered a lot of my own questions. http://thyroid-rt3.com/ > > I am a new person to this group! I hope I can get some insite. Guest guest
Kitty is right. And you should post ranges, but if the ranges are the normal ones, looks like your t4 isn't converting and you now have an rt3 problem which could be from the low ferritin and the adrenal problem. With a ft3 that low, no wonder you don't feel well! Where to begin! You need to get the ferritn up and you cannot take 2.5 mc HC once or twice a day and get anywhere. It you post about your adrenal situation on the adrenal forum when it opens tomorrow, they can help you but the short of it is that for MOST people, when you take a tiny bit of HC like this, because of the feedback loop, you end up even lower in cortisol than you started with! Also, you can't even test your cortisol now unless you wean off the HC. As you're on such a small dose, it is probably best to wean off it for at least 2 weeks, then get some salivary cortisol done so the adrenal people can help you out there. You need to be on t3 only to fix this problem, but you won't be able to tolerate much with a ferritin of 35 and if you have low cortisol to boot. Maybe once you get all that in order, you can go onto dessicated thyroid as you said you actually did okay on Synthroid for a while. To get ferritin up, you can take 200 mg of iron bisglycinate a day. Bluebonnet brand is good or Solgar. I am not experienced enough to know how to change you over to t3, but your labs seem to indicate you need to switch from what you're on to plain t3. Read Nick's site for info on switching. Guest guest
Hi ya, Well I know I don't know very much but I would disagree with your dr on that! As like I said before good ferritin levels are absolutely key! With low levels of ferritin you end up making more RT3 and this binds to your receptors and this blocks T3 from geting into your cells. This RT3 problem is then confrimed by your ratio below. Sorry I'm forgetting but are you taking iron? Do you have ranges for your ferritin and RT3 and FT3 results because we really need them to help you work things out. So it would be great to post these results again with their ranges. And we can tell you how much iron to take to get the levels where they need to be. I'm still very new at working out the ratios but I think its 255/33 = 7.7 This is very bad! The ratio needs to be above 20 to feel well! No wonder you're feeling rubbish! Have a look at this great website on RT3 it will tell you everything you need to know http://thyroid-rt3.com/ Take care, Josie my RT3 was 33 and my free T3 was 255, Free T4 was 1.2, Ferritin 35 and Hgb 11.4....these were done 1.5 wks ago... I can't even function and I am so frustrated. I asked my endo if my ferritin could be why i have had such a hard time adjusting and she said it wasnt that bad!! So frustrated!! Guest guest
Val answered you re: the cortef/iron connection. For iron, the best to take is the iron bisglycinate. Both Bluebonnet and Solgar make it in 25 or 27 mg capsules. You can take 200 mg of them. The difference is that it is molecularly bound to glycine and therefore crosses from the intestines into the blood without having to ionize and attach to a protein carrier first. Plus, Albion has a patent on it which proves its high absorption. And it's so safe, it has GRAS standing! If you google Albion iron bisglycinate, you can find the study on it showing that it absorbs directly.
