Obviously I don't want to break the diet, but I know I'm going to find myself in

this situation soon and I wanted to know what people thought was least of the

evils.

Personally, I would choose bread - as long as it was a yummy

bread like sour dough or country with a nice thick crust or

something like that.

As for what would effect us the most, that's individual and needs

to be tested on a separate basis, just like any other " advanced "

food on SCD. They are just post graduation advanced foods.

Yeah I was kinda leaning towards bread too in terms of the symptoms I feel after

eating it. I'm asking because I'm going for a work conference to Japan for a

week. And I know I won't be able to have my chicken wings and avocado and ripe

banana on demand. Although I will endeavor to find avocados, bananas and nuts.

I'll also take some peanut butter brownies with me but I don't think they will

last for more than 2 or 3 days. Breakfast should be ok since I can eat lots of

eggs and some kind of semi-legal meat. But in general it will be hard to find

legal foods.

Bruce, I am not sure exactly but if you pre washed rice, cooked it then rinsed it again while hot, I think a lot of the starch would be removed and that would lower the amount absorbed and converted to carbohydrate.

Bruce, if you must eat illegals, do bring digestive enzymes

along. Any legal broad spectrum product would minimize the

damage from bread or rice.

Hi, Thanks. Yes, I am taking enzymes. I don't really believe they work, just

in terms of how digestion works in the human body, but I figure they can't hurt.

With respect, I'd drink water. And not eat. Or I would do something like

going to a Waffle House and ordering about 3 over-easy eggs. They'd be

cooked in margarine, not butter, but the margarine would be a far less

evil than any starch.

Carry food with you so you don't run into this kind of

situation.

and which I responded to. There's a big difference between " Which

illegal is the least illegal? " and " I'm traveling to a foreign

country on business and don't know what might be

available. "

Grilled fish is good. In fact, sashimi (just the raw fish, no rice) can

be SCD legal.

How long will you actually be in Japan? How long is your travel time each

way? What type of hotel will you be staying at? Will you, for instance,

have a refrigerator and a microwave in your room?

Anything gluten free! Gluten is so hard on your gut (as a general rule) and is so allergenic, so I would avoid it if at all possible! Hi Bruce,

If you're absolutely stuck and can't bring SCD food with you or are not able to have the chef or host prepare a SCD legal meal, I'd guess (and I'm definitely NOT encouraging you to eat illegals) you might:

1. Choose which, of those foods you listed above, gave you the least problem before you started SCD or . . .

2. Choose which, of those foods you listed above, has the least amount of gluten or . . .

3. Take a look at what's allowed on a Gluten Free Diet (they allow rice and potato BUT not pasta and bread) or . . .

4. Choose to eat only the foods that are SCD legal.

These are just guesses and again, I stress . . . I'm not encouraging you to stray from the SCD.

HI Bruce,

I was in Japan for 10 day ( for work) last year and I can let you know that it will not be a problem to find legal foods there!!!! The quality of food is amazing: yogurt, meats and fish!!!! in the morning you can have omelet, just eggs, fluit ( fresh), amazing fresh juices ( not from the cans) and etc.,

Western diet is also available.

Hey thanks, this puts my mind at ease a little. Few questions about Japan -

Were you in tokyo? Roughly, how many yen did you need for 10 days? Any sights

you would recommend seeing?

I feel grains, particularly wheat (bread, pasta), are the most evil.

I'm going for 10 days and travel time is about 15 hours each way. Hotel will be

typical, I doubt there will be a fridge or microwave, but I'm not sure about

this. I'll probably just look for a grocery store and stock up on avocados.

Thing is there are many dinners planned as part of the proceedings so I will

have to eat at some of those. But I'll do my best anyhow.

I could not resist because This a hypothetical that is not at all realistic for

an adult. If you want to eat off SCD go do it. But there is always something

plain to eat where ever you find yourself with food. I have traveled

extensively all over the world while remaining on SCD for six years.

Bring nuts and dried fruit, nut and fruit bars, something, you should never find

yourself starving!

Hi Bruce,

I just returned from a 12-day vacation in the Caribbean and although it

was much easier for me because I was staying in a condo and their food

supply is primarily from the US, I have a couple of suggestions that

might help.

1. For your travel day, prepare a couple of grilled chicken breasts and

pack that, along with some slices of cheese, hard boiled eggs, veggies

like carrot sticks or green beans (cooked or raw depending on how

advanced you are), and a brownie or two. Freeze the chicken breasts and

pack a couple extra ziplocks in your lunch bag (I put all of this in a

1-gallon ziplock inside my carryon). Once you get through security, go

to a fast-food place with a soda machine that dispenses ice and put ice

in your ziplock. This will keep your meal cold for hours.

2. Bring a cooler as a checked bag. In the cooler, put yogurt, muffins,

brownies, etc. I label all my containers also include a note that talks

about my illness and diet so the inspectors know what's in there. Even

in a hotel room, you can keep the ice going in the cooler and at least

have your yogurt every day, plus save any leftovers you get from meals

out.

3. Bring probiotics (these can go in your cooler).

This might not be enough to last your whole trip - but it will keep the

good bugs going and help in case you do ingest illegals. I think that

given the feedback from other travelers, you might not be able to eat a

lot of variety, but with the fresh fish, fruits, etc., you should be

able to stay pretty much on track.

I agree -I even have soup/broth frozen, God forbid I or my kids end up in the

hospital etc someone could bring me that

even if i had to put fruit in -which I shouldn't with yeast - ripe banana, avoc

are a no cook easy travel thing - buy them there obviously -but to me there's no

reason to ever go illegal - meat and veges made as legal as possible are

everywhere :-)

Yes, I agree.Take your own homemade trail mix.  I use Lara bars as well. I've never had a problem taking them through security, at least domestically.
