Guest guest
We just went through this with my daughter. We got a list of providers off the insurance web site-we have United and it was easy, but if you have any trouble call your Insurance 800 # for assistance. I began my search with a 15 mile because driving all over longterm just doesn’t work for me- then from the list I called and did 5 min phone interviews- you can also post the list of names on D’s list and then get some feed backHope this helps!Best of luck,Jeanette From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of CHRISTOPHERSent: Sunday, July 22, 2012 8:09 PMTo: sList Subject: Psychiatrist/Psychotherapist Recommendation Good Evening Everyone,I have a 6 year old son that is on the spectrum. Guest guest
Hi ,Dr. Udell has a wonderful reputation, however he is a pediatrician and not a psychiatrist or psychotherapist. My son has his first appointment next month with Dr. Folstein, a psychiatrist at the Autism Psychiatry Clinic at UM in Miami; I know she takes Medicaid, not sure of other insurance. Guest guest
We just recently started seeing Dr. Folstein. She seems insurance friendly, we have Cigna and I've had no problems. Also, she's great on the wait times, the most we have ever had to wait for her have been 15 minutes, unlike my child's previous psycharist who we've had to wait up to 2 hours previously. She only sees kids on the spectrum, and will give you a few refills for your child's medications, unlike other doctors who insist on seeing you every month for a refill. Also, for the first appointment, she only wants to see the parent, that way you can calmly discuss the problem at hand.Oh, and also she is email friendly, I have emailed her with concerns and she's gotten back to us very quickly. My only complaint is the location. She's next to Hospital, and the commute is rough for me, I live in Broward. But compared to what we had before, she's worth it for us.It's really important that if you decide to see a psychiatrist, make sure they specialize in autism. There is a lot of other psychiatrists out there who will see our kids, but really have no clue what to do. I, unfortunately, learned this the hard way.Good luck!APSubject: Re: Psychiatrist/Psychotherapist RecommendationTo: "sList " <sList >Date: Monday, July 23, 2012, 12:34 PM Hi ,Dr. Udell has a wonderful reputation, however he is a pediatrician and not a psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Guest guest
This is an excerpt from an email posted on a different Autism list serve. I have never heard of or met this MD but found the info interesting enough to save the email. I currently drive to Melbourne once a month to get services from our DAN Dr. so this drive does not seem excessive to me. Below is the email excerpt: I found this doctor in n County, Florida. She is not a DAN doctor, but has had similar training. She is a functional medicine doctor and uses the same type of labs that we were used to using at the DAN doctor's practice. Two major differences: She DOES accept all insurance INCLUDING medicaid and CHIP programs! She is much more natural healing based, not resorting to pharmaceuticals as fast as our DAN doctor did. If she was located hours away I would drive to see her as we did for our original DAN doctor. Anyway, I just thought I would post this in case it helps anyone. It was so difficult to raise the $ every time we went to see the DAN and have to pay for labs as well and I know it may be that way for many of you. If you have Medicaid, this may be an alternative. Dr. McEachrane-Gross www.peppertreeprimarycare.com While I am at it, here is an organization in Florida that gives mild soft chamber hyperbaric oxygen treatment to children for free (If you can, they ask you have a fund raiser and make a donation, but it is not required.) www.chamberofhope.org I hope this helps some one! Guest guest
I have limited experience with psychiatrists or psychotherapists but from what I have gathered by talking/listening/reading about other people's experiences with this particular sect of doctors is that it is mostly about prescribing meds. I could be wrong about this and if I am please fill me in. Thanks! Psychiatrist/Psychotherapist Recommendation Good Evening Everyone, I have a 6 year old son that is on the spectrum. Guest guest
Dr. Folstein sees my son Dylan. I can attest to everything that AP states. We have been seeing her for a while now and she is excellent. Yes, the commute is rough but not so bad if you time the I -95 rush hour. She is from Hopkins/Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore, and I went there several years ago when we had a MAJOR behavioral crisis. They stabilized my son in Baltimore and she averted a major crisis earlier this year by knowing how to adjust the meds. She listens to the parent, is email friendly and totally gets the spectrum of autism. Worth the drive and she is part of the School of Medicine network at University of Miami. They take most insurances, including Medicaid and part of the Miami complex. I will caution you that the building is old and that you should not expect a fancy office BUT the care, and knowledge she has of autism is amazing To: sList Sent: Mon, July 23, 2012 1:11:33 PMSubject: Re: Psychiatrist/Psychotherapist Recommendation We just recently started seeing Dr. Folstein. Guest guest
Ok, called Dr. Folstein. They do not take my son's insurance I think I will look into putting him on my new insurance (it takes effect oct. 1st, new job). That insurance they do take. Until then, can anyone recommend different therapies or other resources that have worked for your children. My son was just diagnosed a year ago. I have been primarily relying on the school system and his current doctor for guidance and I don't feel like he is getting everything he needs. Guest guest
Psychiatrists assist with medication management and intervene and help with severe behavioral issues and other symptoms that medicine can help alleviate; OCD, anxiety, depression, aggression. Depending on the severity of the child’s symptoms, Psychologists/psychotherapists can assist with the emotional/social end of things. For children who are higher functioning or diagnosed with Aspergers, the therapy would help with social skills, understanding the world around them, helping them understand their diagnosis and the limitations that imposes on them. For children ages 3 to 11, this would predominately consist of play therapy. The play would help facilitate their expression of emotion and feelings. Older children and adolescents would also begin to notice they are a bit different from their peers and may need assistance with understanding that, as well as working on their feelings of self-esteem, etc. Psychologists/psychotherapy can also assist siblings and parents cope with having a family member that requires more assistance and care. I have read many times in this group of a parent who is going through martial difficulties or is just feeling lost and sad. Going to a therapist could greatly support and help a person through this difficult time. I hope this helped!
