TK--- not usually as the crown metal can hide the amalgam

underneath. all metals look the same with x-ray.

Do you remember the circumstances when you received the crown?

Perhaps that would help. For example, I have one crown that was put

over a broken front tooth - since I remembered what happened and when,

I was sure there was no amalgam underneath. (We've since replaced

the porcelain-on-gold with composite and I was right)
