I would check free T3 and free T4 levels first. Free T3 should be in the top quarter of the normal range. If it isn't I would consider armour or SR T3 before decreasing the cortef. If your thyroid is ok, then you could always attempt gradually lowering the cortef dose (I usually do it in 2.5 mg increments, adapt to that dose, and then another 2.5 mg increment). That was me posting about it about it and sadly I have nothing to offer but sympathy. I reduced Cortef from 20 mgs to 12.5, and just got back from the doc's having gained another couple of pounds. Plus I need to go back up a bit since I'm completely running out of energy in the late afternoon again and can't cook dinner. My diet is also pretty good although it's not exactly low calorie (4 T of flax oil a day is a lot of calories!). I'm getting as much exercise as I can tolerate without spacing out the rest of the day. I am putting on muscle for the first time in ages, I was wondering whether part of the weight gain was a shift from blubbery watery fat to muscle. Or maybe I'm kidding myself. If you figure out something that helps, let me know. It stinks! Nell

Or maybe I'm kidding myself. I believe you should be able to tell based on whether your clothes still fit. If they do, or are looser, that is weight gain due to increase in lean muscle. Also excess cortisol supposedly puts weight on in the middle, so if your waistband is tighter that might be too much cortisol. Could be other explanations, too, I suppose. --
